The apical dendrite looks great, and does wonders in a slice. What does it do in the living cortex? It depends on the cell.

Pyramidal cells in the cortex send a long apical dendrite to layer 1. What is its role? What happens when it's gone? ✂️

A causal spatial role for apical dendrites in the cortex
Cortical pyramidal neurons project a long apical dendrite to layer 1 (L1), to receive synaptic inputs that are thought to provide contextual and possibly suppressive modulation. In visual cortex, thes...

Hi Bluesky universe!
Sharing with you my latest work.
This study highlights the importance of the ZP protein Dusky-like in controlling the shape of the fly corneal lens (an apical ECM).
A thread 🧵

www.science.org/doi/10.1126/...
Apical cell expansion maintained by Dusky-like establishes a scaffold for corneal lens morphogenesis
Cell expansion remodels the apical extracellular matrix to give the developing Drosophila corneal lens its curvature.

Stipules can be modified (through evolution) to perform tasks. In the aptly named Leea macrophylla (#Vitaceae), the stipule sheaths the stem’s apical bud, thus protecting the apical meristem & the developing leaves. #stipule. #Botany 🌾🧪🌱

Well, would you look at that - travelling waves in cortex have the ingredients necessary to do credit assignment via the apical dendrites of L5 neurons! 😎

#neuroscience 🧪
Sensory inputs trigger a fast-traveling wave, followed by a slower wave carrying top-down info (value/choice). The late wave reactivates ensembles in superficial cortical layers.

Touch-evoked traveling waves establish a translaminar spacetime code

Touch-evoked traveling waves establish a translaminar spacetime code
