It’s comparatively easy for a car driver to make up time lost after a signal. Not so much for people walking and biking. Make signals shorter or get rid of them.

Based on a few days of walking #Providence (and watching behavior), I think the city could do with fewer.

While it may be a constructive conversation, some of the council members were using panic language today. I am glad BikeWalk is at the table, but until we also restrict cars based upon size, engine size or HP, this is all lip service to real safety & more cover for motonormativity & car dependency.

New raised crosswalks on Provo Center Street. BikeWalk Provo advocates have been pushing for these for years! They're only finally being installed because the previous city engineer retired and a new, forward-thinking engineer was hired.

As it moves towards more pedestrian friendly spaces, a suburban zoning commission in #Kansas pushed back on a proposed development b/c it had 2 drive-thru retail spots.

Happy to see progress like this.

BikeWalk Provo activists created similar additions to speed limit signs in January 2020.

You won't be surprised to learn the city quickly took them down, but they garnered a lot of attention!
A 15 miles per hour speed limit sign. Beneath, a sign in the same font and style has been added, which says, "It's not a race." Three more 15 MPH signs. Beneath each a rogue sign has been added. One says, "No, really." The next says, "Try it. You'll like it!" And the third says, "Drive friendly." Four more: Speed Limit 15 "Slow down." Speed Limit 15 "Start seeing pedestrians." Speed Limit 15 "Not a suggestion." Speed Limit 15 "Seriously." One more: Speed Limit 15 "$120 ticket. $&@%!"

I'm writing to share that October 1st through October 8th is Week Without Driving. Week Without Driving is an annual event to provide people a prompt to make changes in the way they move around their community for just one week. In doing so they may see the built world a little differently and see ways to make positive change. If you are able to change the transportation mode of one trip this week, that is a great opportunity to learn. If you are not able to, don't worry, you have not failed! It is now a chance to reflect and talk with friends, families and constituents about why it was not possible to have an option. As council members you have an important responsibility to shape the community for generations. I'm hopeful that introducing this week to you, gives you a chance to see new insights.
