Bioturbation is an important #ecosystem service. By sifting critters out of the substrate, the stingray creates openings for colonization and oxygen to the seafloor. ✔️out our recently paper on the habitat preference and bioturbation of southern #stingrays 🦑🧪🌊

Scarabaeidae. Studies in the Brazilian Pantanal, where livestock is the main economic activity, confirm these beetles maintain dung removal and soil bioturbation.🧪

This is a fascinating study of the genesis of deep tropical soils through bioturbation, mostly by termites and ants, and chemical weathering. New data (from OSL and other methods) and new ideas on long-standing hypotheses. doi.org/10.1016/j.ea...

6 years on twitter I never learnt a word as call as bioturbation! #bioturbation

Bioturbation on the map - delighted to see a nice accessible summary of our work by @alisoncribb.bsky.social in @currentbiology.bsky.social, read here: doi.org/10.1016/j.cu.... We are working on a follow up, watch this space! In (A) bioturbation intensity, in (C) the mixed depth.

There's barely even *sedimentation* out away from continents, with 1.4 millimeters added every 1000 years (see link below).

Even bioturbation is slow and limited.

Anything done to the abyssal plains is effectively permanent.

Bugs in the soli are a feature though. Bioturbation, helps compost dead stuff, etc.

🧪Bioturbation in the deepest parts of oceans is more diverse and active than previously thought
🌊Hadal benthic communities are regulated by gravity flows triggered by earthquakes
⚒️Gravity-flow deposits are first colonized by deposit-feeders, followed by chemosymbionts

To better understand bioturbation in the hadal zone, the authors here examine sediment cores collected from depths of more than 7.5 km. They characterise biogenic sedimentary structures, colonization ...

Welcome back to another #FossilFriday

Here is a slab of shale composed of trace fossils made by burrowing worms. This specimen comes from the Upper Cambrian (Paibian) Davis Formation in Missouri. This is a great example of Bioturbation. This was collected by the late Bruce L. Stinchcomb.

Invertebrates, mud, and measuring bioturbation and other biogeochemistry.

The yellow sand that is near the top of the mud shows how much the animals in the aquarium mix the mud. The deeper and more the yellow sand is mixed into the mud, the more the animals are mixing.

We can be a lot less concern about bioturbation in our records... assuming sedimentation rate is high enough. 🧪⚒️

Stingrays in shallow water help regulate seafloor ecosystems, and they stir up sediment (bioturbation)

Another key service of clams is bioturbation. If left undisturbed, sediments will trap nutrients and become inhospitable deeper down for many types of life, due to lack of oxygen. When clams dig down and "rework" that dirt, they bring oxygen down and free nutrients from below! (228)
