Spring migration well underway in Riogordo, Málaga. Both Pied Flycatcher and Common Redstart passing through this morning. Heralded on their way by the singing of the recently arrived Nightingales.

Felt like Spring had arrived at the Desembocadura del Guadalhorce today. Good variety of waders and wildfowl but surprising lack of. hirundines.

First visit in a while to the local patch of Arroyo de las Zorreras in Riogordo. First Nightingales, Woodchat Shrike, Swift and Red Rumped Swallow of the year have arrived to join the House Martins and Swallows.

Combined a visit to the excellent Andalucía Bird Festival in Montejaque near Ronda

On the nearby Llanos de Libar Black Wheatear, Chough, Peregrine, Short Toed Eagle, Blue Rock Thrush, Melodious Warbler as well as the numerous Griffon Vultures.

Full day of birding at Fuente de Piedra and Lagunas de Campillos. Some 60 species seen. Highlights included 2 groups of Black Tern, Purple Heron, Stone Curlew, Lesser Kestrel. The summer plumaged Grebes at Laguna Dulce are looking stunning.

A fine morning at the Desembocadura del Guadalhorce yesterday. First Woodchat Shrike of the year and good numbers of waders. Nice to see the Black Necked Grebes in summer plumage and loads of Shovelers doing their whirling courtship display.

The local area looks more like Scotland than Andalucía at the moment. Briefly gotout along the Rio de la Cueva (Riogordo)between the showers. Apart from the local usuals was nice to see 3 Rock Sparrows and a Great Spotted Woodpecker. 17 species seen.

31.3.2026 Desembocadura del Guadalhorce / Málaga.Saw the well reported Little Gulls .Other highlights Slender Billed Gulls, Whiskered Tern, Pintail and first Yellow Wagtails and Bee Eaters of the year. Avocets on nests. 48 species seen.

A couple of hours at the Rio Grande near Cártama today . Despite lots of disturbance (helicopters landing and taking off, diggers and loose dogs - it's amazing what birds will tolerate) managed to see a good variety of waders and raptors. 29 species seen.

Beautiful November morning at the Arroyo de las Zorreras in Riogordo. Good day for raptors with Kestrel Sparrowhawk, Griffon Vulture and a late Short Toed Eagle present. Nice to see a party of Corn Buntings also. 23 Species seen.

Morning visit to the local patch in Riogordo. A couple of Olivaceous Warbler in the bottom part of the Arroyo and was great to see this Little Owl in the olive grove just off the path.

Local patch of Arroyo de las Zorreras in Riogordo today.
Winter visitors (Robins & Black Redstarts) arriving and still some Willow Warblers passing through. Highlights: a 'patch first' Dartford Warbler,2 Blue Rock Thrushes and 2 Ravens. 23 species.

Birding by Bike today. Rio de la Cueva (Riogordo to Las Cuevas). 31 species. Highlights : Blue Rock Thrush, 5 Red Rumped Swallows,100s of House Martins, G S Woodpecke. 3 robins and big increase in Blackcaps. Winter is coming.

A few notes and pictures from a walk in the area around Tajo Gomer and Auta (Riogordo)at the weekend. Lots of birds coming to drink at the animal drinking troughs including a small group of Hawfinch.

Just north of Torremolinos today in the mountains. A sad lack of Eagles, nevertheless 5 lifers, Woodchat Shrike, Black Wheatear, Lesser Kestrel, Thekla's Lark and Rock Bunting. #birdingMalaga #BirdingAndalucia

Atmospheric morning walk along the Arroyo de las Z in Riogordo after the first rainfall of the autumn yesterday. Notable were two Turtle Doves, 1 Redstart, Cirl Bunting and 3 very noisy Kestrels.

A midday visit to the Guadalmedina river in Málaga. Highlights included Wryneck, Bluethroat & Water Pipit. Couldn't find the recently reported Jack Snipe near the stadium but was busy as it was a match day. 24 species seen. Great urban site for birding in Málaga.

AM visit to Arroyo de las Zorreras in Riogordo. Noticeable arrival of winter visitors with Crag Martins, Chiffchaffs, Song Thrushes, Robins, Black Redstarts all present and increasing numbers of Blackcaps. 3 Cirl Buntings also. 24 Species seen.

Bright & breezy day at Arroyo de las Zorreras (Riogordo/ Málaga). Windy conditions meant only fleeting views of most birds though this nightingale sat still long enough for a 📸 A huge noisy flock of Spanish Sparrow in the eucalyptus trees. 27 species.

Managed to get a few hours at the Desembocadura del Guadalhorce( Málaga)this morning. Highlight was the Red Knobbed Coot ( Laguna Escondida). A few pairs of Little Tern are breeding. Good variety of gulls including a small number of Audouin's.

Desembocadura del Guadalhorce today. Happy to catch up with both the red knobbed coot and the 8 ferruginous ducks that had been sighted in the last few days. 47 species seen.
