#borings
Fossil hunting can be a real race against time as June's fossil of the month shows! One of our wardens, Phil, rescued this holey rock from the beach just last month before the piddock borings reached the fossils within.

The earliest fossil cetacean with Osedax borings: narrowing the spatiotemporal gap between Cretaceous marine reptiles and late Cenozoic whales | Royal Society Open Science
Borings of the extant bone-eating worm Osedax have previously been found in Cenozoic cetaceans and Cretaceous marine reptiles. The stratigraphically youngest Cretaceous example is from the Maastrichti...

For #MolluscMonday, these 2 pieces of driftwood are more than a little bored, thanks to marine clams (Martesia) that drilled into them. Wood-boring clams likely evolved from rock-boring clams during the Jurassic Period, described in my book LIFE SCULPTED (2023, U. of Chicago Press). #ichnology 🪵🧪

#MolluscMonday Bivalve borings in a fragment of a fallen marble column from the ruined Temple of Serapis at Puzzuoli, Italy. The temple was famously figured by Charles Lyell in his Principles of Geology (1830).

Packing for a work trip is an impossible word problem to me. You have to look professional but it will be 85° & you have to walk everywhere. You have to take your shoes off at the airport but can only take 3 pairs max. Your closet only offers home hobo or aged borings and there's no time to shop

Staying with a #trace #fossil theme on #SpongeThursday! Entobia cretacea is the name given to these silicified casts of clionaid sponge #borings in a hard calcareous substrate (now dissolved) -- spherical chambers were connected by a network of canals -- scale bar in mm #Cretaceous (~85 MYA) Kent UK

Wouldn't get your hopes up, but the HPH is reporting small signs of activity. With the opening of the Obama Presidential Center and re-activation of the south entrance to MSI, the long abandonment of the Clarence Darrow Bridge is not just scandalous, but incomprehensibly stupid.

Right! Included a section in my book 'Life Sculpted' on that topic, telling how bone-eating worms were first seen in modern whale falls, then paleontologists found their borings in fossil whale bones, soon followed by finds of similar borings in Mesozoic marine-reptile bones. 🧪🐋🪱🕳️

A good indication that you may have some wormy friends inside are the presence of paired borings that resemble the number 8
I don't have pics of an oyster with these borings on my phone but will definitely share one with you. But here is a chione clam that has both the borings and the blister 😊
