#budworms
The Douglas-fir tussock moth is a native insect found in parts of southern British Columbia. The City has trapped and monitored these moths and spruce budworms for the past 15 years.

I bet that keeps the budworms out of the flowers. Great idea! 👍

I had one of those. I used to wingman it at night, using my flashlight to lure food. Plus I would feed it my nasty budworms that were eating my petunias.

Certainly not budworms, who ate my petunias

Monarch caterpillars are nice

Today’s Migrant: Tennessee Warbler

Weird fact: Tennessee Warbler populations can fluctuate dramatically depending on outbreaks of spruce budworms in the boreal forest. In “budworm years,” their numbers may surge.

Have you had any Tennessee Warblers this year?

Also me: the worm is a bud

Maine’s new strategy to stop another insect disaster in the North Woods
After a 26-year outbreak devastated Maine's forests, the state is testing a targeted attack on spruce budworms invading from Quebec.

I meant to put alt text for that last image: blue spruce needles afflicted by the moths which breed spruce budworms. The trees here are in serious danger of dying out. The winters have been too warm to kill the moths off. Global warming is killing the forest.

I was starting with boreal breeders, but do they all like to nosh on Spruce Budworms? I see three that I immediately think of that way, and would not be surprised to learn that the others do.

We see CNV among populations of white spruce, which co-occur with the budworms, but not in Norway spruce. This might imply potential selection forces on the gene in white spruce.

Me petunias won’t grow because the budworms keep feasting
September 3, 2025 at 5:02 PM
Beware of budworms! And spider mites! Otherwise you have little to worry about. I used lots of Bt for the worms. I used spinosad as well but that has fallen out of favor due to impacts on pollinators. Simply spraying water might be enough to keep the mites in check.

budworms definitely NOT being buds 😠 but let's give it up for the monarchs
August 19, 2025 at 1:17 AM
I had these or similar little assholes in my petunias recently!! Argh! I don't know about these ones, but the ones I had were budworms. I mostly picked them off by hand and sprayed with a spinosad spray

Was expecting lots of rain while we were out, so didn't talk to our cat sitter about taking care of the plants. They're all pretty unhappy, but definitely recoverable. The petunias took it extra hard because they're still dealing with budworms. ☹️

Some other warblers that may go for the budworms.
October 17, 2023 at 12:09 AM
Yeah, Evening Grosbeaks, Bay-breasted Warblers, and a couple other species that are totally slipping my brain right now take advantage of outbreaks & fledge more young. Covid prevented the big spraying runs for a year or two & spruce budworms went nuts so those birds have had lots to eat.
