The Republicans by the 1960 election were a broadly conserve pro buisness party with a libertarian wing and a liberal wing and the Democratic Party in 1960 was a broadly liberal party with a racist wing and a social democratic wing.
to piggyback on this: it's not that Rs were anti-slavery & good and Ds were pro-slavery & evil and they flipped, it's that Rs were pro-fat cats and anti-slavery (so half-evil except slavery is obviously 10000x the worse evil here) and Ds were pro-worker and racist. it's been a slow purging of evil
The “something” in question was the workers themselves deciding by 1966 that they no longer wanted New Dealer welfare capitalism if it meant black Americans would benefit from it while anti-war protesters were free to burn the flag
