They are basically quoting Al Campanis now.

I think that this interview will be remembered alongside Al Campanis' interview on Nightline, which was supposed to be a celebration of Jackie Robinson but ended up with Campanis revealing his prejudice that kept Black players from becoming managers and GMs. www.youtube.com/watch?v=DFb5...
Al Campanis Cancels Himself on National TV (1987)
Al Campanis, the first Greek-American to play in the major leagues, died June 21, 1998, but many felt he gave up the ghost long before. On April 6, 1987 he d...

"Black people are Low IQ" - Shorter Al Campanis
Al Campanis said the quiet part out loud. #They don't think Black people are intelligent enough for these roles. He also mentions the lack of Black QBs to prove his point. He's probably disgusted looking up & seeing so many Black QBs in the NFL now.

Think back, if you're old enough, to the career-ending scandals of the 1980s, the moments when people publicly said bigoted things and were cancelled for it. Jimmy the Greek, Al Campanis, James Watt, Marge Schott. Look up their Wikipedia pages and see what happened to them.

The Dodgers went to the Trump White House today to desecrate Jackie Robinson, Sandy Koufax, Fernando, Hideo, and the diversity, equity and inclusion that always gave the team their strength. Instead, they walked in the tradition of Al Campanis. Email them your thoughts! fanfeedback@ladodgers.com
The Dodgers Are Planning to Visit the White House. It’s a Disgrace.
To meet with Trump now is to defile the memory of Dodgers great Jackie Robinson and to humiliate many of team’s own players.

"Al Campanis played with Jackie Robinson! He couldn't have been racist!"

Oh, yes. He could.

Al Campanis defined “Low IQ” as “lacking the necessities”
Trump refers to Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson as "that new, Low IQ person"

Al Campanis was fired from the Dodgers for saying basically the same thing

Jimmy the Greek. Al Campanis. Marge Schott. As someone else here pointed out, McCarthy. The Pink Scare. On and on andonandonandon.

And I'm not going to bother to go find the NYT editorials on Jimmy the Greek, Campanis, Schott, and Watt, but I can tell you right now that I would not be surprised at all to learn that there's whole bunch of shaming and shunning in them.

What's more, it shows that poptimism was a corrective to outright, unvarnished racism and sexism by, among others, the agenda-setting chronicler of multiple generations of rock music. Just straight-up Al Campanis shit.
The Wenner interview really puts paid to the idea that poptimism was, on the whole, bad or unnecessary. Wenner Thought was worse and less necessary.

Koppel also did that with Al Campanis, though probably not on purpose.

Al Campanis, general manager of the Los Angeles Dodgers, was by no means a famous bigot, but a softball (ahem) interview absolutely and immediately ended his career.
