You’ll all have seen the many announcements and PR pieces from #ColossalBiosciences. There are reasons to be concerned about the general message promoted by CB, one being that it is seen >by some< (US politicians in particular) as meaning that we can devalue conservation. A 🧵 1/n

And this is not a good look for #ColossalBiosciences or any of the people who promote de-extinction. It makes the field look like a grift afraid of appropriate criticism. END thread, please share :)

It explains how those experts who've publicly criticised #ColossalBiosciences have been targeted by an online smear campaign involving anonymous blog and online media articles. These articles include such quotes as… 5/n

@newscientist.com tested the smear articles for AI-cues and concluded that “many … were created by chatbots”. New Scientist also says that #ColossalBiosciences (and CEO Ben Lamm in particular) has denied involvement in these articles... 8/n

For these two reasons and others, relevant experts – among them @devoevomed.bsky.social, @toriherridge.bsky.social and @nicrawlencenz.bsky.social – have publicly said critical things about #ColossalBiosciences. If CB is operating within the arena of science, this is >of course< to be expected... 3/n

It's also fair to criticize the #ColossalBiosciences efforts on technical grounds: no, those were NOT ‘dire wolves’ as claimed, just designer dogs with genetic modification. The other animals that CB talks about will be GMOs, not extinct species brought back to life.... 2/n

Or how #ColossalBiosciences gave exclusive access to @newyorker.com, Time Magazine, and @wired.com to the “Dire Wolf” story, ensuring extensively positive PR and avoiding criticism
I keep thinking about how this gets in the wsj. The wp goes up on arxiv 12/21. WSJ article is 12/29. There is an infinitesimal chance that the WSJ just stumbled upon this paper, reached out, and did interviews and a photo shoot, all over winter break. Much more likely MIT folks contacted them.

#ColossalBiosciences CEO #BenLamm is trying to do more than just bring back dire wolves and wooly mammoths. Watch as he breaks down functional de-extinction. #SXSW2025

More #ColossalBiosciences BS; Lamm says “We have a couple of consistent critics that don’t have the highest levels of credentials,” and that we’re “people who haven’t contributed to their fields in quite some time.” Yet they’ve applied for a patent based on our elephant TP53 retrogene/LIF6 work 1/n
“The dire wolf fits the Jurassic Park model of de-extinction beautifully. It is clearly for spectacle”

This company claimed to ‘de-extinct’ dire wolves. Then the fighting started.

I’m a broken record x2. Over on X the slander/pettiness continues from #ColossalBiosciences co-founder Ben Lamm; a pinned post to boot! I wonder who was quoted in a @newscientist.com story about Colossal’s critics‽ Hint, only a few of us; we want answers, and that’s a *big* problem for them…

What are our wisest forms of triage on an unraveling planet? What could we do for conservation, the climate and humanity with funds available to #ColossalBiosciences for such efforts?

I teach conservation triage with these formerly hypothetical issues. Read the thread on this post: bit.ly/3YmtDzw

Imagine a ghostly white #direwolf roaming again. 🧬🧪🐺 #ColossalBiosciences recently unveiled genetically engineered gray wolf pups, sparking interest in recreating the dire wolf. The species diverged 1.5-2M yrs ago - amazing how similar their skulls are. Not quite #DeExtinction, but cool!
