IDE to CompactFlash doesn't work on every system, because it's an adapter trying to emulate the behavior of an antique hard drive.
Some BIOS versions straight up shit themselves.

You can totally replace old IDE hard drives with modern-ish IDE to CF or SD adaptors. I have a box full of them in my attic.
But that's because I'm a guy of a certain age and disposition leaning on retro computers instead of cars for my middle age crisis. It's less reasonable for an airline.

Love it so much when old computers find new ways to torment me. It keeps doing this at the very end of the DOS installation. It's a 512MB CompactFlash drive. The 256MB one worked fine. Maybe different geometry to make the recognised capacity smaller will work.
