"Even when disabled people appear in the archive, they appear as objects of intervention rather than witnesses to their own lives. When disability materials are [viewed] according to the medical model, the archive reproduces the very framework that justified confinement and cure" #CripLib

What I've been hearing is that especially European vendors and publishers are honestly a lot less worried about the ADA and more concerned about EAA (European Accessibility Act) commission.europa.eu/strategy-and... which is more stringent. We should be good if they adhere to that. #a11y #CripLib

Unfortunately, I saw several yesterday, hence me posting last night and today. TBH, they need to sit with their discomfort with being called out on their snobbery. For several reasons.

I'm really glad for literary mediums that expand accessibility for all.

She's absolutely reading, and you can tell her a certified reading specialist said so. Why the fuck would they shame people like that??
Also, she should be able to get more books through Bookshare if she wants them. ❤️ I love that she found a way to read that works for her brain!

A tale of 2 different brains: For some of us to best process content, audiobooks help. I need text *along* w/ any audio.

Ranganathan would support audiobooks b/c laws 1-4 apply.

Books are for use.
Every person his or her book.
Every book its reader.
Save the time of the reader.

"Oral storytelling predates writing by millennia, and many of the oldest stories in our literary canon existed for centuries as bardic tales before they were put down in print."

Take it from a librarian. You can miss me with your Western-centric ableist attitudes about book mediums.

Or they're there and aren't used properly. Horribly frustrating.

Also those doing Q and A.

"I have a loud voice." Volume isn't the problem when you have wonky auditory processing. #CripLib #AcademicSky
I will never be impressed or amused when presenters don't use an available, functional mic. This is bare minimum accessibility practice, and failing to do it is the fastest way to show that you are unserious regardless of what you have to say
November 21, 2024 at 1:26 PM
And re: closed captioning. It benefits others out of the deaf community. I have to use it all the time to aid in auditory processing. Accessibility measures often benefit more than the targeted audience. #CripLib
If you don't include alt text on your images, and if you don't include closed captioning on your videos, you are excluding a large number of people. Do you want to be inclusive? It doesn't take a lot of effort but means the world to people who have low vision, are blind, or are Deaf.
