#cygwin
I think of this roughly the same way I think of cygwin/MSYS -- a way to get non-portable software to kinda sorta work on Windows, but not what you want to be using if you were building portable applications from first principles

So it runs on vanilla Wine 11.21 actually

The development suite works too. But for debugging, you need to set SHELL=/bin/sh in Wine, as if it tries to run bash, it fails, as Linux vars bleed into that Cygwin environment
The Palm OS Cobalt simulator running on Wine Staging. A lot of it is native Win32, because the PalmSource did not make an ARM emulator.

The fact that it is running is impressive

Ironically, this is a part of why I ended up staying mostly with C in my early days: Cygwin had "g++", but it couldn't really compile anything, as even the smallest program would tend to explode in a storm of compiler and linker error messages with full name-mangling on display. Was fun times...

Looks like it does, technically speaking, work if I use a third-party server. Here it is with XWin32 5.40 on Win2k.

Trying to find old (2001-2002 era) versions of the #cygwin /X distribution and having only limited success. I did manage to find a partial fileset for v4.1.0 (ca. July 2001) that seems to have the client binaries, libs and headers, but not the server.

Might be enough? 🤷‍♀️

CVE-2026-112161 - Lack of integrity checks in Mobatek’s MobaXterm
MobaXterm Personal Edition (Portable) 26.4 GA extracts the CygUtils64.plugin file without first verifying its integrity. A local attacker with write permissions on this file can replace the ‘bin/cygwin1.dll’ library contained within it with a malicious library. When the victim opens a Local Shell session or uses a Cygwin-based function, the …

Ah yes I remember now - it’s what Cygwin (and later WSL) always wanted to be but couldn’t because it didn’t actually boot a Linux kernel (whereas WSL2 does, albeit in a VM).
October 13, 2026 at 10:13 PM
Question.. what do you use it for? Back in the day we’d use Cygwin to run certain tools that were generally for Linux but weren’t ported to Windows and instead were compiled against (mostly) their original libraries (plus a decent shell because cmd.exe sucks). That still the general reason?

In practice, it's almost always left blank. When something does use it, it tends to be something pointless like the program's name or literally just "Class".

AFAICT, you can also only set the class when creating a key and can't change it afterwards, making it inconvenient for many things.

i liked the one shell script that eventually invoked a .x file that was actually another shell script, not a *nix executable like any reasonable person would assume

"wait, the script has figured out by this point that it's running in Cygwin on a Windows machine, why is it calling a .x? ...oh, ew"

PowerShell is great. I'm no power user, but after decades toying around with Bash, Perl, Cygwin, and cmd.exe, it works well enough for me.

Any suggestions for a better terminal and scripting setup on Win11? Looking into Git Bash (probably closest to my needs), Nushell, or an Alacritty+Python combo.
