I have (a pair of) INTEL SSDPEL1K100GA Intel® Optane™ SSD DC P4801X Series (100GB, M.2 110MM PCIe x4, 3D XPoint™), pretty cool little devices and tragic that Intel dropped the Optane project. My system is running FreeBSD 14.1-RELEASE-p3 GENERIC amd64 on HP/Intel. The cards are installed in a furcating RIITOP M.2 NVMe SSD to PCI-e 3.1 x8/x16 Card. ` `diskinfo -v /dev/nvme0ns1`` returns a sector size of 512 and ` `nvmecontrol identify -n 1 nvme0`` reports that the `Current LBA Format: LBA Format #00` and the device supports 7 (seven!) LBA formats: Code: LBA Format #00: Data Size: 512 Metadata Size: 0 Performance: Good LBA Format #01: Data Size: 512 Metadata Size: 8 Performance: Good LBA Format #02: Data Size: 512 Metadata Size: 16 Performance: Good LBA Format #03: Data Size: 4096 Metadata Size: 0 Performance: Best LBA Format #04: Data Size: 4096 Metadata Size: 8 Performance: Best LBA Format #05: Data Size: 4096 Metadata Size: 64 Performance: Best LBA Format #06: Data Size: 4096 Metadata Size: 128 Performance: Best I'm pretty sure I want Format #04, who wouldn't want the extra 10% of `Performance: Best`, so I tried ` `nvmecontrol format -f 3 nvme0ns1`` which works for 60.79 seconds and returns `nvmecontrol: format request returned error`. I get the same results with `-f 03` and with `nvme0`. Weirdly, the other LBA Format options (including `-f 0`, which should be current) return an error instantly. Every time I try `-f 3` it thinks for 60 seconds, but no love. Any hints or should I learn acceptance of `Performance: Good`? Is it worth trying _`sysutils/nvme-cli`_?

Oddly, contains a DITL resource that seems unconnected to any of the desk accessory's actual functions and referring to DiskInfo.

A few weeks ago I bought a couple of these 500GB HDDs for under £25 ea.($34) which is cheap nowadays compared the more well known HDD brands. They're well presented in what looks like OEM factory sealed packaging and everything apparently as it should be. The first one initialized and formatted without any trouble and Crystal DiskInfo showed it as genuinely new and with light use since then has worked OK. However today I decided to use the other one and it quickly turned out that it was a dud. HDD death click with Windows reporting as being unable to format it. Tried it in a different external housing and, surprise, surprise same result. Anyone else here had experience with Toshiba branded HDDs like this? Any problems? Any chance they're fake? If so are there any known tell tale signs?

I bought a 2.5" HDD on Aliexpress, I know this drive is used but it shows few hours of use and good health in crystal diskinfo. What do the Chinese change in the HDD to mask hours of use and true health? Do they also change or remove important HDD functions such as head parking and drive power...
