I hope mass audiences will baulk at automated dubbing and subtitling. But I'm not optimistic.

I'm going to MIPCOM, the big content trade show next month, where I will inevitably be approached by a bunch of tech bros offering AI dubbing and subtitling.
I will then smile very large, look them in the eye, and say that I would rather shit directly into my own hands and eat it.

The Expos documentary does old kung fu movie style dubbing of anyone speaking French instead of just subtitling it and it’s so bad and distracting I thought my new TV was broken for five minutes

French people have an history of imposing French, but we also have an avid public for all kind of foreign films with dubbing and subtitling.

If you can find the Magnoliafan edit, they have made him considerably less annoying simply by cutting over half his scenes, and dubbing over his voice with Star Wars Alien Language Noises while subtitling him with a rewritten script. It's actually genius.

I wonder what the net effects of Netflix etc is for future cohorts. You can watch in any language, subtitle *anything* and it’s always much nicer than dubbing. But it’s voluntary…

Whether you agree or not, this is a tired take. Idk, I mostly like subs, but sometimes I want to watch with my mom or a friend with a learning disability. A few animes have terrible subtitling and better dubbing. It's not that deep.

To be clear, programming that doesn't have "dubbing support" is just programming Amazon doesn't want to pay *actual people* to voice the work. I work in subtitling not dubbing but this hits pretty close to home
