Like many things in reality, this is conveniently almost Zipf distributed, which means the top element accounts for roughly 1/log N of the total and roughly sqrt(N) elements account for fully half of the total. Another win for econophysics!

The development of democratically-based policies to reduce economic throughput to an environmentally sustainable level without triggering economic crises and without excluding part of the world's population is called econophysics. A sound economic vision.

Ecological Econophysics for Degrowth
This paper outlines a synthesis of ecological economics with econophysics and other complexity approaches to economics. Arguably, the resulting “ecological econophysics” will be scientifically sounder...

Quite possibly the nerdiest Lunch with the FT we've ever run, featuring the inelastic markets hypothesis, 'econophysics', the Black-Scholes model's weaknesses and several drive-by shootings of economists. www.ft.com/content/6f54...

using stat mech of Ising models in econophysics or STS is *far* more of a stretch than using it to study LLMs, diffusion models, etc, and yet those stretch cases are useful directions of research!

Using some insights from structuralism and classical econophysics, I put together two estimates of human compute that converge pretty well. Also connect the math back to Dunbar's social intelligence hypothesis. nicolasdvillarreal.substack.com/p/structural...

Steve Keen claimed he and his friends basically invented econophysics in a review of my book. He gave it a mid rating because it didn't cite them and didn't have any new econophysics in it.

My book is not about econophysics. It was about me as a physicist learning economics.
please share with me the most infuriating review you've ever gotten (doesn't have to be a book review)
one the most infuriating reviews i got was from a family member, who wrote she LOVED my book, but deducted a star because she's not into comics. she's a librarian. 😭

economists, if you want to understand how some sociologists may feel about economics, just remember your reaction to econophysics.
March 23, 2026 at 11:45 PM
I had the opposite. My book has "economics" and "physicist" in the title. The reviewer, purported expert on econophysics who claimed to have read the book, assumed it was about econophysics. He was upset it didn't cite him and his friends.

(It was about me as a physicist learning economics.)

"Philosophers couldn't care less" is a bit strong. Jennifer Jhun and @jamesowenweatherall.com have both written about econophysics. I know that model transfer from physics to economics is part of a new grant Catherine Herfeld has. There are others too

took me today to realize that securities trading is just that, gambling. dressed up all nice, with stochastic modeling and econophysics. but in the end, gambling.

People often yell that the Economy is rigged, but what might that mean more precisely? More and more these days, I'm drawn to my PRX paper on the topic, "Games in Rigged Economies" #ComplexSystems #Econophysics #GameTheory

Games in Rigged Economies
A game-theoretical model of a rigged economy predicts the emergence of cartels followed by a risk of instability as the economy becomes more complex.

im actually curious about this! the weights themselves have a market effect. if you coupled markets like attention, what happens? this is actually a immediately explorable question in econophysics! if only i had the time to explore more

Nearly everything we see is a derivative of useless and painful inequality. Fix that and the other things start to get fixed. Fail and we all go to hell in a handcart. We need to target maximum freedom of action for all which allows for useful inequalities - wealth Gini close to 0.5 (Econophysics)

the nice thing is there is there is a perfect dictionary already to map softmax attention and the residual stream directly to market behavior using existing econophysics literature!

My very speculative AI assisted attempt to use econophysics concepts to understand what's happening and how to fix it...
🧵 Almost everything wrong with our societies is a derivative of wealth inequality. But this isn't just politics—it's physics. Our economy has been engineered into a "Wealth Siphon" that freezes the vast majority. Here, I try to explain the physics of the trap and the blueprint to escape. #inequality
Escaping the Freeze: The Physics of the Wealth Siphon
