1/7 Really happy to see my PhD work published in ✨Developmental Cell✨ today! We find human endoderm is specified by two developmental trajectories 🔀, and the choice between alternate routes is dictated by the combinatorial BMP4/Activin signalling. www.cell.com/developmenta...

A primitive endoderm-centric view of mammalian development

In this Review, @rpkimyip.bsky.social, Denis Faerberg and @eposfai.bsky.social give an overview of mammalian primitive endoderm development, focusing on the mouse and, where appropriate, the human context. 🐭

How do endodermal cells behave during gastrulation? In this paper, the authors found that a gradient of BMP regulates mesoderm and endoderm convergent extension. Endoderm cells also use the mesoderm and Cxcr4a signalling to guide their movement. The imaging is beautiful!

Single-cell analysis of bidirectional reprogramming between early embryonic states identify mechanisms of differential lineage plasticities in mice
Garg et al. use bidirectional reprogramming between embryonic stem (ES) cells and extra-embryonic endoderm (XEN) stem cells to probe transcriptional and epigenetic factors that direct lineage specification in vivo and facilitate or prevent lineage interconversions. A strong endoderm transcriptional program and distinct epigenetic state accompany extra-embryonic endoderm specification and prevent lineage conversion.

Animal embryos in their earliest stages comprise three “germ layers”: ectoderm (outer), mesoderm (middle), and endoderm (inner)

It has been known since the ~1950s that these three layers are already fated to develop into certain specific organ systems

So exciting to see this in print! Ever wondered how embryonic cells know what (fate) to become during early development? In particular when they might see different signaling cues? We investigated this!

And a lovely cover from Zoe Ruiz and @oliveringe.bsky.social!

New work from our labs (with @itsthewoolab.bsky.social). Congratulations to soon-to-be Dr. Tu, who convinced us that Met was simply too juicy a target to ignore when it comes to controlling endoderm migration. #zebrafish, #endoderm.
New preprint alert! Led by @qsb-uc-merced.bsky.social grad student Po-Shu Tu from my and Stefan Materna's labs, we found that the receptor tyrosine kinase Met is required for directional migration of #endoderm cells in #zebrafish. But — plot twist! — Met's canonical ligand HGF is dispensable.
