i can't decide if these people are Stupid Gnostics, Stupid Epicureans, or both
Fundamentally, the problem is that transhumanism, longtermism, etc. combine a glorious utopian vision of the future with a broadly utilitarian mode of moral reasoning. If the ends can justify the means, and the ends are a literal heaven among the heavens, what's off limits?

Worst thing about reading in history of philosophy is from pop philosophy you get the idea that Stoics/Epicureans/Cynics had particular strategies for and orientations toward happiness/life.
That's true but they also all have zany, weird ideas about logic, science, and, like, weather.

Good paper (like all of his work) but it will always bother me that Epicureans had the exact same prescriptions for tempering emotions, but Stoics get all the credit

Stereotypically, epicureans are supposed to be all about living good life, but there’s actually a lot of what you might call proto science. The reason is, if I understand it, that Epicurus believed you would be more at peace with empirical knowledge.
