"epistemicide"
almost every article, series, or podcast about trans people/trans care in the nyt centers the voices of cis people
when trans people get to speak, they are taken out of context, misrepresented, or called biased activists
it's like if you wrote an article about abortion and primarily spoke to men
A new podcast from the New York Times left out patient stories that could have best illuminated its topic, those of trans youth but also of detransitioners, argues @evanurquhart.bsky.social.

epistemicide in a nutshell
I genuinely don't know what to do when there's so few public trans figures that one of them having a bunch of bad ideas means that like a quarter of the total popular writing about an issue sucks shit

Moreover, ICE must be destroyed
“Getting DIY hormones is like getting backalley abortions”

Yeah in that the coolest people I know are organizing and helping each other do it safely while you whine that the State is doing what it does best and you aren’t ready to fight it.

Epistemicide as official federal policy
Trump signed an executive order that tries to write trans people out of existence today.

It's mostly symbolic.

It's still gonna make for a LOT of pain for the trans community--just probably not where you think it will.

It's gonna be real bad for grant funding, which means medical research.

Attempted epistemicide running rampant in the U.K. today.
Theory bite!

This is probably something that cis people would find useful, as much or more than trans people, because a lot of cis people participate in it in conversations about transness and trans folks ;3

StatNews [Feb 22] -- CDC will no longer track trans identity in its health surveillance systems, incl. HIV monitoring & its key Youth Risk Behavior Surveillance--the only nationally representative data on trans youth, used by states to develop/refine programs. [@rikiwilchins.bsky.social‬]
CDC will no longer process transgender data
The agency's decision will likely affect a number of federal health surveillance systems that serve as critical resources for researchers.

Was looking into what Cognitive Scientists mean by ‘domain-general’ cognition, and then hit upon this. This is definitely NOT how we use that term.

Tip: read the last sentence to understand what went wrong here.

Sigh.

Interesting thread, up and down, on "epistemicide"
The core of my idea is that knowing is an act people do together. This isn’t about who controls the computers or data, whether the systems are open, or even whose labor is misappropriated. Any of these arrangements could be changed, but the problem remains that LLMs restructure our social relations

Adding "Epistemicide" to my vocabulary! We're in the midsts of the largest organized destruction of knowledge imaginable.

"pineapple on pizza is epistemicide" says future internet user infected with Words Are Just Vibes disease
notice specific phenomenon

label that phenomenon to be able to analyze it

label takes on value judgment connotations as analysis demonstrates the phenomenon has problems

popularization of the label shifts focus away from phenomenon to value judgment

label becomes generic insult

the number of cis people who straight up know nothing about the history of conversion practices is astonishing. Epistemicide innit.

So long as people don't truly understand radical feminism, transmisogyny and the epistemicide of trans women's oppression will persist.

LLMs are a tool for epistemicide
Yo, historians, what the actual ****?

I've seen how LLMs handle "history." This is... not good.

just, if you were curious, other things that don’t resolve the underlying problem of an unsupportive family:

• making sure unsupportive family can intervene, undermine, & abuse the child at the earliest convenience

• EPISTEMICIDE

i know it’s not a good faith answer but wikipedia is still free.
