#figure-technologies
So the “figure out how to use it lest you be left behind” replies about ‘AI’ that have been popping up here strike me as inauthentic but also kind of funny because they grant the point that rather than an automation panacea these technologies are quite difficult to figure out how to use effectively

People do it in prison. They do it using adaptive technologies if they have a disability. People sing when they're in captivity, in the most dire circumstances imaginable. People write when they're in hiding from pogroms. If you can't figure out a way to do it, that is very much a you problem.

This detail of an Athenian vase shows a war chariot advancing with infantry carrying huge figure-of-8 shields. By this time, both of these military technologies were long obsolete making me wonder whether this is a depiction of a Homeric (or other epic) battle scene

Here’s “how the most powerful technologies of the twenty-first century are being folded into the machinery of violence.”

Is this the first AI war?
Artificial intelligence isn't just helping you figure out what to make for dinner. It's deciding who lives and who dies.

Try substituting other futurist technologies, like, "We know this laser guns are ridiculously powerful, but the only way forward is to get them out there in big numbers and figure it out."

Since the printing press, new ways of mechanically reproducing and transmitting information have appeared at an accelerating pace, and judges are asked to figure out the rules for these new technologies long before legislatures come to grips with them and pass special, tech-specific laws.

Rather, another telling of this story goes like this:

Technologies of oppression never last forever. People under the boot hunger for freedom and will eventually figure out how to get it however fleetingly.

Authoritarian elites have a vested interest in countering this, or they'll lose power.

Humans are so amazing.

We can figure how to build these technologies, do the maths, come together to achieve this…and at the same time be the most blind-sided, greedy, selfish motherfuckers in this local galaxy.

I got yelled at for even mentioning this stuff, but nonetheless, there's a lot of work going on to figure out how to cool buildings without just throwing a bunch more electricity at them.
How new cooling technologies could cut AC electricity demand
Keeping buildings cool without relying solely on air conditioning will be critical for adapting to climate change.

This style of argumentation over LLMs accomplishes nothing except making the writer feel self-righteous.

LLMs are weird, but remarkable new technologies that are going to do a lot of good for us as we figure out how best to employ them.
“Capable LLMs require a logic of dominance and of disregarding consent of the people producing the artifacts that are the raw material for the system. LLMs are based on extraction, exploitation and subjugation”
I was disappointed to read Cory Doctorow's post where he got weirdly defensive about his LLM use and started arguing with an imaginary foe.

@tante.cc has a very thoughtful reply here:
