#fptp
#r4today has Gove on, pontificating about FPTP, explaining that PR is aktchully less democratic(!) and that FPTP keeps politicians honest.. all that with a straight face apparently

We're taking FPTP to bold new exciting places.

Good reminder that FPTP sucks!!
Here’s where the vote tally stands at 8:45 PM local time

Most results are from rural areas and urban areas haven’t reported yet, but the AfD is posting numbers that would result in a majority government in Canada’s first-past-the-post system

(Germany uses mixed-member proportional representation)

Local elections confirm it: we’re a five‑party system. Yet FPTP means seats don’t match votes and stability isn’t guaranteed. Govt’s restoring Supplementary Vote for mayors, so why keep FPTP for Westminster? The Representation of the People Bill is a start, but FPTP must go. #FairElections #PR #FPTP

I'm old enough to remember when conventional wisdom said that FPTP meant more stable government.

I mean, this is the issue with FPTP - battling over voters in FPTP basically pushes even center right parties towards extremes
Also, I feel like anyone who thinks the solution is more parties needs to take a good look at the UK. Reform pushed both the center-left and center-right further right. The Tories went full fascist to outflank Reform, and then Labour said "Hold my beer" and tried to be further right than the Tories.
Like the rhetoric from every 3rd party isn't "well, America is a big country, with a lot of different interests that can't be served by 2 parties. I plan on serving 5-20% of you," it's "We're representing the silent majority not served by either party" which really is an argument for a 1 party state

I despise FPTP

U.S. politics are better with MAGA getting a 32% vote share in a PR House than a MAGA-controlled Republican party getting 46–54% vote share in an FPTP system.
It's unclear to me what problem the breaking of the two-party system is supposed to solve

Multi-party FPTP certainly is one of the electoral systems of all time lol

critical support to elon in his attempt to splinter the right wing vote in a FPTP system
He has a name folks.

Be sure to push the America Party to all the MAGAs on Team Elon.

If you want change, In a FPTP system, it is not pragmatic to vote for a party that supports FPTP
January 24, 2025 at 8:48 AM
And this is why FPTP and strategic voting remains fucked up and suboptimal!
Some of what is happening is that the massive strategic shift of NDP voters toward Liberals to block Tories... may have helped Conservatives in some places.

This was a seat where the NDP was running for reelection. But the NDP fell to third, and Conservatives easily picked it up:

FPTP moment

FPTP is indeed a double-edged sword.
The irony of Orban losing big due to the large number of seats chosen through single-member constituencies and lack of run-offs when he previously changed the constitution to create more single-member constituency seats and eliminated run-offs.

FPTP is such a bad way to do primaries if you have them lmao
internal polling from Barnes and Crowley appears to confirm Wedgewood's poll showing Fran Hong is the front runner with around 35-40 percent of the vote
July 22, 2026 at 5:50 PM
just clearly better than FPTP for single seat races
June 13, 2025 at 6:39 PM
Desperately clinging to FPTP, not reforming tuition fees, ignoring sustainable transport etc

Divide the conservative vote more in a FPTP general election, I would be so owned Mr Ackman
June 25, 2025 at 7:25 PM
great news, in a FPTP system there are three landslides and eight coalitions in these numbers

The interesting question is what Reform do. Electoral reform was in their 2024 manifesto before they topped polls and started winning under FPTP.

These results already show FPTP in General Elections isn’t fit for purpose anymore.
