so far, it's too early to say how the final day of EV in most of Florida (but, critically, not the final day in a few mostly blue counties that will bank a lot more Dem votes) will be in terms of partisan breakdown, but turnout will be the highest of the entire EV period.

I’ve only noticed a few Gainesville Florida residents on bsky, but I figure this is worth sharing regardless.

Awhile back, I became aware that GNV has an obscenely high number of surveillance cameras— second highest count in FL despite its size.

I contacted Deflock the USA. Here’s what I learned:
My original email: Hello there, I am very interested in getting a map, something a bit more specific regarding known Flock camera locations and perhaps more user-friendly, to the point, etc. Gainesville, Florida, has more cameras than Jacksonville - Florida's most populous city. Jacksonville is 4-5Xs more populous (at best). So why do I want this? Because Gainesville is a solidly blue city. I want to take this to the city council and do what I can to get the word out and make people more aware. One more thing: those cameras are not just license plate readers. Otherwise they would not be putting them in public parks or large university campuses that don't allow vehicles for the most part. If you're able to help me, i would be incredibly grateful. JO, … Attached is deflock-gainesville-fl-alpr.csv, 308 records across Gainesville and Alachua County, with road, coordinates, manufacturer, operator where recorded, surveillance type, first documented date and a link to the underlying map record for each. The Jacksonville comparison holds. Gainesville shows 161 active against Jacksonville's 108. For a council presentation it is worth being precise about the rest of the state, because someone will check: Tallahassee is higher at 182, and then it drops away sharply, with Tampa at 51, Miami at 48 and Orlando at 39. So the accurate claim is that Gainesville carries more plate readers than Jacksonville, Miami, Tampa and Orlando, despite being a fraction of their size. That is a stronger sentence than a single comparison and it survives scrutiny. Three things in the data that change the argument, two of them in a useful direction. Most of them are not Flock. Gainesville runs a mixed fleet: Axis Communications 67, Flock Safety 45, Verkada 19, Motorola Solutions 7, Axon 7, Vigilant Solutions 6, LiveView Technologies 2. Calling them Flock cameras understates the problem and gives a council an easy deflection, since a contract question about one vendor leaves the rest untouched. The accurate framing is that Gainesville has assembled a plate reader network from at least seven vendors. The campus placement has an explanation, and it is probably the strongest single fact here. The University of Florida is recorded as the operator on 58 of them. The university runs its own plate reader network, separate from the city. That answers the question of why they appear where vehicles are not the main traffic, and it raises the one worth asking at council: whether city and university systems share data, and who can query across both. 84 cameras in Gainesville are recorded as removed, against 161 active. That is an unusually high turnover and it is the kind of thing worth asking about directly, since it may indicate relocations, failed pilots or a contract that ended. On the point about them not being plate readers. Every one of the 161 active Gainesville records is tagged as an ALPR, and 151 of them carry a traffic zone tag. The data does not support the idea that these are a different kind of camera. That said, the tags reflect what volunteers recorded, so a camera that is something else may simply have been logged by someone who assumed. If a specific camera in a park looks wrong for a plate reader, send the location and it is worth checking properly. Flock does sell products other than plate readers, so the suspicion is not unreasonable, it is just not what this particular dataset shows. Standard caveat for the council: these counts are community-mapped, a floor rather than a census, and the first documented date is when a volunteer recorded the camera, not when it was installed. Two things that will help at council. Meeting records mentioning Flock, ALPR or license plate readers are archived at https://deflocktheusa.com/docket/, and 341 communities that have canceled, rejected, paused or let lapse a contract are listed with dates and sources at https://deflocktheusa.com/cancellations/. Florida entries carry particular weight with a Florida council, and the state has an unusual number of them following the removal order from state rights of way.
