2/ Lysenkoism: When Ideology Kills Science
Trofim Lysenko rejected genetics in favor of Marxist pseudoscience. He denied Mendelian inheritance, banned “bourgeois” biology, and convinced Stalin that acquired traits could be inherited.

why do all the guys who believe in ethnic superiority on the basis of genetics look like mutants? my “psychological” read is that, precisely because they are so hideously ugly and physically weak, they have a vested interest in the notion of superiority by mere virtue of inheritance. just a theory!

One thing you pick up if you read about Lysenkoism and the Soviet Union is many Russian scientists knew the party line against Mendelian genetics was bunk, and were able to carry on with some level of genetic inheritance research, but had to disguise the aims & jargon of the work
SCOOP: The NIH is moving to prohibit funded scientists, inside and outside the agency, from collecting data about gender, according to a draft policy I obtained. It’s part of the NIH’s aggressive crackdown on gender-identity research. www.chronicle.com/article/gend...
Gender Data Would Be Off-Limits Under Proposed NIH Policy
A draft rule would bar scientists funded by the agency from collecting data about gender identity, following other steps the administration has taken to restrict research on LGBT topics.

Across illnesses from cancer to Parkinson's, huge bets on genetics have underdelivered. I can't help but wonder whether obsession with genes reflects the long shadow of “race science” and eugenics: not so much explicit racism as a deep and largely false cultural inheritance that genes are destiny.
Bill Clinton said “Unraveling our genome would “revolutionize the diagnosis, prevention, and treatment of human diseases…”

But for Langston and colleagues, the Human Genome Project sucked the air out of the environmental health space. “All the research dollars went toward genetics…”
Scientists Thought Parkinson’s Was in Our Genes. It Might Be in the Water
New ideas about chronic illness could revolutionize treatment, if we take the research seriously.

5/19 With Vavilov ousted, modern genetics, even the concept of a gene, #Mendelian inheritance and evolution also became symbols of an unwanted reactionary movement, and the Marxist-Leninist Lysenkoism took their place as ruling principle.

Entire population scores shifting in 50 years proves genetics isn't the primary driver, human DNA doesn't evolve that fast. Intelligent parents also pass down elite socioeconomic/educational environments. A persistent gap reflects environmental inheritance just as much as DNA.
