#glypicans
Our previous work showed that Drosophila glypican Dlp binds WNT palmitoleate in a hydrophobic pocket to maintain solubility. Is this conserved in vertebrate glypicans — and how important is lipid binding in vivo? Until now, no endogenous separation-of-function allele existed to test this.

induced by inflammatory signals produce fewer synapses

The role of glypicans in the nervous system is still being uncovered. In this preprint, researchers @hopkinsmedicine.bsky.social @oneneurojhu.org show GPC6 plays a role in nuclear pore complex integrity and TDP-43 nuclear function, with potential to impact neurological function ➡️
Regulation of Glypican 6-mediated Wnt activation maintains TDP-43 nuclear localization in neurons
Abnormalities in TDP-43 (Transactive response DNA-binding protein 43kDa) localization and function span multiple neurodegenerative diseases and are implicated in driving neuronal degeneration and…

2/3 The twist: despite being heavily glycosylated, both glypicans act exclusively through their CORE PROTEINS — not their heparan sulfate GAG chains. This challenges a long-standing dogma in the proteoglycan field! 🔬
