The United States has made almost no progress in closing racial health disparities despite promises, research shows. The government, some critics argue, is often the underlying culprit.
Black Americans still suffer worse health. Here's why there's so little progress

“Race is not a biological category that naturally produces health disparities because of genetic differences. Race is a political category that has staggering biological consequences because of the impact of social inequality on people’s health.”

Shameful.

These funds are meant to eliminate health disparities and study chronic illnesses like sickle cell disease.

They must be immediately reinstated.

Jay Bhattacharya once studied health disparities. As NIH director, he’s allowed such research to wither
Jay Bhattacharya’s tenure as NIH director has seen health disparities research swept up in the Trump administration’s attack on DEI

This is horrifying.

Did I mention I teach on health and health insurance disparities, abortion, and vaccines?
Just learned from LinkedIn that a Heritage Foundation affiliate is now FOIA-ing (or equivalent) instructors’ syllabi to go snooping for supposed illegal DEI at state universities. It’s hard to describe how far past McCarthyism we’re headed here.

Vaccines have had proven success eradicating lethal & devastating childhood infectious diseases, saving millions of lives.
This movement against immunization is widening health disparities & threatening public health.
Ignorance is deadly.

The CDC has removed data on sexual orientation, gender identity, and health disparities from their website.

Pages removed include:
- Youth Risk Behavioral Surveillance System
- Social Vulnerability Index
- Efforts to Address Racism as a Fundamental Driver of Health Disparities

🚨 The CDC website is purging resources on LGBTQ+ health, diversity, equity, and health disparities. This is not just a bureaucratic change. It’s a dangerous decision with profound negative public health consequences. Let’s break down the harm this will cause. 🧵⬇️

Also, it does not matter if Russ Vought is against DEI policies, if Congress has instructed NIH take to into account health disparities in an assessment of a grant. An executive order cannot overcome a formal statement by Congress. Somebody needs to point that out to him.
TINA SMITH: Researchers in MN made a breakthrough in childhood cancer in Black kids with a grant. But it seems that according to your proposed rule, this type of research wouldn't allowed bc it's 'DEI.'

VOUGHT: We are against DEI policies. We have intended to rid of them whenever we possibly can.
July 16, 2026 at 4:27 PM
Because if you didn't say a word about DOGE eliminating every federal grant with any element that Grok thought had anything to do with LGBTQ health, climate change, health disparities, and most of all DEI?

I don't think you give a shit about academic freedom. I think you're just a racist.

Bhattacharya has done far more to undermine health disparities research than to contribute to it.
About last week’s NIH & OMB meeting…

Okkn what basis can the NYT claim that Bhattacharya has been trying to preserve work on health disparities??

I have NEVER heard him speak up in favor of studying the social and economic determinants of health at NIH. Not once.

Attacks on our reproductive freedoms are making the maternal health crisis worse, particularly for Black mothers.

During Black Maternal Health Week, we recommit to eliminating these disparities and ensuring all women have access to quality maternal care.

"Health disparities research" is a field of study where researchers look at how things like race, ethnicity, gender, socioeconomic status can influence health outcomes. Now any gov't website about this says "page not found".

This is a dystopia that I did not imagine that we'd be living through.

4 years ago, racial health disparities had deepened. Today, @publichealth.boston.gov is making progress tackling disparities through targeted intervention on drug overdoses, infant and maternal health, and chronic disease. Thank you, Dr. Ojikutu and all our health equity partners. #BostonSOTC

Keep in mind that in 2020, James Hohmann — seen here rolling his eyes and saying “screw this” about racism effecting health disparities — was still on the news side and anchored the leading politics newsletter, read by hundreds of thousands everyday.

But I’m sure he was “neutral” and “objective.”
