#hitomezashi
Did some #mathartchallenge with my students in the last lessons before summer break. I analyzed periodic Hitomezashi patterns.

#MathArtMarch Day 17 Symmetry. Three fold rotation and reflections. Hitomezashi on the isometric lattice.

Random hitomezashi patch.
It has two mistakes, at least.
But it’s doing its job as a patch perfectly. #mathart #embroidery #sashiko

Take a grid, for each line add 1 to all points on a randomly picked side of that line, paint points black if the result equals 0 to 1 mod 4, and you get a hitomezashi pattern.

But what if we do this for an arbitrary pattern of curves instead of a grid?

NEW: Questions in Dataviz: What is a Hitomezashi Snowflake?
questionsindataviz.com/2025/07/25/w...

Inspired by @mathskath.bsky.social - looking at encoding data as hitomezashi stitching (steganocoding) and creating digital equivalents, before diving into the mathematics of snowflakes.

Here’s the last thing I made for #ArtAdventCalendar that I didn’t get time to post. It’s a small cross-body bag, fully lined. All hand stitched including the pomegranate hitomezashi pattern & silk trim. Internal patterned fabric is from Japan, gifted by the friend who the bag was gifted back to! 😁

I thought I'd try posting a #pico8 cartridge to the official site.

I'm starting with one I haven't shown off yet: a hitomezashi embroidery pattern editor! See the link below for a live version and more background info!

Inspired by @anniekp.bsky.social and @aliensunset.bsky.social, I created this beautiful piece of mathematical art! Hitomezashi stitching!

To read about a bit about how I stumbled on this, read on!

Day 5 of the math art class I’m teaching is complete. Today involved finishing up the stained glass window pieces and doing more hitomezashi stitching.

Done!! My little #hitomezashi #Heatmap experiment is complete. While not a particularly interesting composition, it definitely proves that you can move through bands of colour within a hitomezashi pattern... Neat! 📊 #dataviz #dataart #crossstitch #embroidery

speaking of web generators,

I got the Hitomezashi Pattern Generator

The second afternoon session at the Bridges #MathArt conference is "Hitomizashi Galore": The first talk is by Katherine Seaton on "Interleaved Friezes: Celtic Knotwork and Hitomezashi." (archive.bridgesmathart.org/2026/bridges...) She talks us through which Friezes can be done via Hitomezashi. (1/2)

Goals ( or are they targets?) achieved:
1) Successfully modified Hitomezashi design on @turtlestitch.bsky.social so it embroidered on my machine
2) Used it to mend two garments #visiblemending

Small steps, but making progress! What next?

Finally got around to making a hitomezashi sashiko clickable planner in Desmos. Perhaps some of you may enjoy using it!

Such an amazing “workflow” in which hitomezashi, heat sources and complex mapping gives beautiful patterns.

#MathArtMarch Day 22 prompt is hexagons. So I've skipped ahead in my plan to methodically investigate colour exchanging symmetries in hitomezashi, straight to some hexagons! Reflection leaves one colour fixed and exchanges the other two, while rotation through 120 degrees causes "all change".

Last two drawing-on-the-cricut experiments -- Hitomezashi patterns! Now I’m done for the day!
