I just finished “Human Acts” by Han Kang. It’s a historical fiction around the Gwangju Uprising and Massacre. It’s a heavy read and I would recommend if you like reading books set around a historical event not commonly written about. Warning: very graphic

Nobel prize-winning #HumanActs by #HanKang portrays a defining moment in Korean history—the pro-democracy Gwangju Uprising of May 1980—through and around the fictional story of Dong-ho, a young boy killed in the government-sanctioned massacre that ensued. A difficult, eye-opening book! #Bookvember

I finished #HanKang #Wedonotpart. I read other books( #Greeklessons, #Convalescence, #Humanacts) but I found this deeper, dreamlike, gloomy.I loved how she brings collective memory in the daily life. #Memory becomes a duty not immobilized as a personal memory(ricordo); it remains alive and burning.

First read of 2025 📚💙 and as is tradition, it is a reread. #HumanActs by #HanKang translated by Deborah Smith.

This is a superb read about the 1980 student uprising against the South Korean military rule and imposition of martial law

Absolutely agree! #HanKang is my favourite political #novelist. If you haven't read #HumanActs about the #GwangjuUprising & its aftermath, you should. Now!

Just got #GreekLessons & eagerly awaiting the english translation of #WeDoNotPart about the 1948 #JejuUprising

Just finished reading Human Acts by Han Kang. Literally no surprise she won the 2024 nobel prize in lit. Moving and brilliant and important. In the face of rising authoritarian and right wing movements, it's these personalized histories that become so crucial to moving forward

한강 스타터팩.. 아니 입문용 추천으로 <소년이 온다> 언급. #HumanActs 동시에 광주민주화운동도 간략하게 소개. 그냥 뭐랄까 작가님 너무 고마워요..

Finished reading #HumanActs by Korean author #HanKang wow what a harrowing read but so powerful and needed. Such a contrast to seeing now what is happening today in #SouthKorea as martial law was shut down in 6 hrs and how the military has acted - refusing to fire on their own people.

After closing Han Kang's novel, I wanted to reach back in time. I wanted to tell Dong-ho: "You didn't lose."

Because of you, Korea became a nation that can remove a president who does not serve the people.
You won.
We remember.

Some books flow easily. Others demand everything from you just to turn the page.

Han Kang's #HumanActs ( #소년이온다 ) was the latter. It took me a long time to finish. The book moves through the 1980 #GwangjuUprising through bodies, voices, wounds that refuse to stay buried.

In Human Acts, Kang illustrates just how cruel and gruesome these days were, and how easy it was to reduce human beings into a ‘lump of meat’.

Last week we read Han Kang’s #thevegetarian again with its brilliant depiction of mental health, obsession and familial duty. #humanacts is a firm favourite by the same author. Seek both out. #independentbookshops

#HanKang: I read #Wedonotpart, #Greeklessons, #Convalescence, and #Humanacts. Loved the first, dreamlike & haunting. The concept of collective MEMORY as a civic duty, vs. immobilized personal memory, is key. Remember first, help others to remember, to prevent history from repeating
