MDA5 binds long dsRNA and is activated during viral infections like #SARS-CoV-2 and EMCV.
Using iCLIP to sequence MDA5-bound RNA during infection, we found it overwhelmingly bound human RNA. This RNA was mostly intronic and near repetitive elements like Alus prone to forming dsRNA.

But IDRs still matter! We found that deleting the N-term. IDR broadened LARP6 RNA footprints, suggesting a role in promoting the RNA-binding selectivity of the La-module. Critically, these iCLIP observations could be reproduced in vitro, suggesting this is an intrinsic property of the IDR! 4/10
