Peer review meltdown in one diagram.

Greater emphasis on glamour journals leads people to try their luck with mediocre papers. This drains the review pool (they often have to be re-reviewed elsewhere). That drops the accuracy of peer review, creating more incentive to submit mediocre papers…
7. We show that this setup leads to a pernicious positive feedback loop. When submissions increase, more peer reviewers are required. Either current reviewers have to spread their effort thinner, or less qualified reviewers must be recruited. Either way, review accuracy drops.

I reported on economics for one (1) year. Everything I learned about it—from data on corporate pay penalties for mothers, co-pays for births, and lack of federal policies on issues like childcare or paid leave—loudly indicated there was little to no incentive for me to have children in the US.

MAGA Republicans first said that federal workers were lazy. Now, they want a $1.3 billion pool of bonus dollars for them. What's the real reason? Are huge bonuses an incentive for ICE and other federal workers to do the regimes' dirty and illegal work?

unrelated but i really hate the tax incentive system. it isn't a grant to productions seeking funding, it's a reimbursement to already-funded productions who spend their money in-state. it doesn't foster local film scenes, it creates a readily exploitable labor pool who'll take what they can get

America has always had classes of people who are banned from voting. Women, Black people, Indigenous people, Asian people. Currently, in many areas, felons can't vote, which gives the state an incentive to criminalize minorities. Takes them out of the voting pool. (Also means legal slavery.)

This introduces new perverse incentives, to overstate patient acuity to get a bigger pool. In straight capitation models the incentive becomes to undertreat.

That system worked because it gave the company a talent pool to draw from and a reason to develop employees, and it gave workers an incentive to stay with an employer for the chance of promotion - which kept institutional knowledge for the company - it was a virtuous cycle...

One great part about having a women's pro league is the incentive to really develop that baseball pitching talent pool. A lot of the hitting and fielding skills translate from softball to baseball. The pitching, not so much.

Here's a sobering reminder for the lonely souls. Dating has become a full-scale for-profit digital industry and as such these companies have every incentive to keep you in the dating pool. They make money from your subscription, from the ads you see, from selling your personal data.

Let's just ban Airbnb in general.

there should NOT be ANY incentive for landlords to remove rental properties from the pool in a given area, that has a follow on social cost to citizens.

( I would allow an exception for rentals of attached units where it is ALSO the primary residence of the owner)

The magical wage rises that occur when you create a higher pool of unemployed and remove all incentive to pay anyone higher and get rid of anything to do with pay equity

Sometimes the incentive is clear: influencer Tim Pool was paid. But political figures like Witkoff - is he getting direction from Trump? From Putin? Does he get what he's doing? Ditto for formerly respectable academics like Jeff Sachs: is it ego, money, kompromat, stupidity? Let's talk about it. 2/

The response rate for peer review requests is dismal. I imagine it's due to: the ever-shrinking pool of reviewers + everyone is overworked/burnt out + the precarity of the job market + lack of incentive for blind review etc
If you're a tenured prof, please evaluate manuscripts at least sometimes.

They call him on it, they get removed from the press pool, then they get fired. Not much of an incentive to step out of line.

maybe MIL is the exception where Attanasio would spend more if he could, but there are more teams that are happy to just sit back and collect, and this only amplifies the incentive to do so, especially when paired with expanded playoffs making it easier to access that pool of money sans investment

The problem is that AI is an incompetency and laziness multiplier. The incentive to actually understand what you're coding is vanishing, and the burden will fall on an ever-shrinking pool of reviewers who actually know their stuff.
