The Green Party has unveiled a new policy at their conference in Brighton, proposing to offer a guaranteed two-year job within four months for young people aged under 25 who are unemployed, not in education, or not in training. Co-deputy leader Mothin Ali announced the plan, stating there are approximately one million 'bored, desperate and lost' young people in this situation. The scheme would involve the government covering half of the salary for private sector positions, with employers exempt from National Insurance contributions but required to provide in-job training. An initial pilot programme would create 9,000 jobs in areas with the fewest job opportunities for young people, such as Rotherham, Ceredigion, Newcastle-under-Lyme, Broxtowe, and South Staffordshire, at a cost of £110 million. The party argues that this approach would reduce long-term welfare costs, estimated at £240,000 per person over their lifetime, while boosting tax receipts through employment. Ali criticised the government's current six-month job placement scheme for benefit claimants, stating that threatening young people with benefit cuts for refusing short-term work is not a proper youth strategy. The policy comes amid rising numbers of 16-24-year-olds not in employment, education, or training, with figures approaching one million since the pandemic. The Greens also announced plans to bring Thames Water and South East Water back into public ownership without compensating shareholders, arguing that the current water infrastructure is inadequate and that public ownership would provide better service. South East Water responded by stating they are focused on delivering infrastructure investments, while Thames Water has been approached for comment. The party's proposals aim to position them as offering more ambitious solutions than the current government's approach to youth employment and public services.
