#ledumahadi
happy #fossilfriday! bonus: this is ledumahadi, a sauropodiform from early jurassic south africa. its name means ‘giant thunderclap’ in sesotho, befitting its size – at an estimated weight of 12 tonnes, ledumahadi was one of the largest land animals of its time

🦖 Daily Paleo 🦖; Ledumahadi mafube

From Early Jurassic Elliot Formation, South Africa, "giant dawn thunderclap" was a 12 ton basal sauropod that hadn't yet evolved columnar limbs. Part of the lessemsaurid family, it was one of the first true giant dinosaurs

An Antarctic Giant.

Some fragmentary remains suggest the existence of a giant, early sauropodomorph.

It most likely belonged to Lessemsauridae, like the geographically/stratigraphically close Ledumahadi.

Ledumahadi is becoming one of my favorite modded creatures in ark. The paleo team really cooks up some banger creatures. Currently on a 4th stamina mutation on it.

April 2024, I finished the second iteration of EVO Therizinosaurus. This is still one of my personal favourites and ones I am most excited to see in game, after Ledumahadi

while most compared to the likes of argentinosaurus, ledumahadi was a titan next to its contemporaries. massospondylus, for instance, was a lithe biped that likely weighed under 200kg

ledumahadi is a lessemsaurid, a clade of sauropodiforms notable for attaining large body sizes despite lacking the columnar limbs characteristic of later sauropods. taxa like ingentia were some of the largest animals of the triassic period

Shantungosaurus: Base genome. Provides facultative bipedalism and robust neck

Ledumahadi: Provides weight bearing, "pawed" forelimbs

Argentinosaurus: Provides large size, hind limbs, tail, air sacs, hips, reinforces forelimbs

Dacentrurus: Provides thagomizer and tail spikes

If you ever go through Golden Gate National Park make time to stop at the Kgo Dumo Dumo dinosaur museum. It's a pretty state of the art museum with the latest research on a bunch of southern hemisphere dinos. We don't have many modern museums around these days in SA, so worth checking out.

Pretty excited to see what looks like a quadrupedal early sauropodiform (Antetonitrus or Ledumahadi perhaps?) stamping in front of what looks like a bipedal sauropodomorph. One of my dinosaurus making it to the screen!
