Irrespective of how John feels, his words are simply not compatible with an inclusive prize that celebrates all LGBTQ+ people. Just like a racist statement would not be allowed in a prize for writers of colour, or a sexist statement tolerated for a prize for feminist writers. /11

Librarians pressured to remove books by LGBTQ+ writers. Librarians harrassed at work for putting LGBTQ+ stories on their shelves. This is the UK-not Hungary, not USA. It's here and now. What can you do? Invite LGBTQ+ writers to your schools and libraries.

We have a story planned for tomorrow morning about how LGBTQ+ writers are coming together en masse to reject the decision by an LGBTQ+ writing prize to announce an anti-trans gay writer on their longlist.
Working on a story about this now.

I reached out to another author on the longlist who I happen to know, and that person is also in the process of pulling out.

(Though it was on the record and likely to be public before I pub, on principle I'm not scooping myself on social by saying who.)
UPDATE: 10 of the 24 longlisted authors have now withdrawn from the Polari Prize.

First Book:
Jason Okundaye, Sacha Coward, Sanah Ahsan, Amy Twigg, Mae Diansangu, Ciara Maguire

Main award:
Olumide Popoola, Robert Hamberger, Andrew McMillan, Rhian Elizabeth

Judging panel:
Nicola Dinan, Bob Hughes

1 of these guys has supported LGBTQ people, clean energy, public transportation, & fundraised for Dems in purple districts.

The other is universally called “a class act ™️😌” by baseball writers.
Clayton Kershaw and Max Scherzer will face off tomorrow night for just the second time in regular season history

The other matchup was September 7, 2008, when fans expected to see Greg Maddux vs. Randy Johnson
