I just heard my proposed talk for 2027 Joint Mathematics Meetings of American Institute of Mathematics (AIM, aimath.org) was accepted! I'll be sharing re: #mathCircle teaching like mine at Stanford & UNC for special session "Math Circles Everywhere: From Classrooms to Communities" #mtbos #iteachmath

More pictures from our Square Number and figurate numbers for 1st-3rd grade #mathCircle at Univ of North Carolina today #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

(w/permission of student & his father) This is the most compelling #pascalsTriangle I've seen by a student-1st grader in Stanford #mathCircle clearly showed how quickly the numbers grow; it's one thing to write 210 or 252 but this shows it! Train station to high rise! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

I'm excited about presenting the Frobenius Coin Problem to my 1st-3rd grade students at #mathCircle at UNC chapelhillmathcircle.org tomorrow. I was a bit rushed and wanted to have a more complete handout with more examples but I think we'll have #mathisfun. #mtbos #iteachmath

I get great students. I'm reviewing #mathCircle homework fr 1st & 2nd graders; a parent wrote, "Kabir was super motivated to finish the homework...we loved seeing that - its [sic] a testament to how engrossed [he is] ... gratitude...for keeping math fun and interesting" #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

I'm always excited reviewing amazing creativity & insights my 1st/2nd grade #mathCircle students share. I thought of a version of Mrs. Perkin's Quilts problem where we add pizza crust. Students figured out patterns - now I'll have them go further all w/o multiplication! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

It's amazing how much #mathisfun we did in the quarter just past at @stanforduniversity.bsky.social #mathCircle for 1st and 2nd graders! Topics include #pascalsTriangle, Bernoulli's Triangle, prime numbers (w/o multiplication!), upper bounds, Moser's Circle Problem, induction,... #mtbos #iteachmath

Algebra & exponentiation for 1st/2nd graders w/o multiplication! My #mathCircle students are great at finding patterns & understanding figurate numbers. We explored a version I created of Mrs. Perkin's quilts w/pizza - it's cool how we can easily create then simplify a formula. #mtbos #iteachmath

We had a lot of #mathisfun in the Chapel Hill #mathCircle with #pingala / #fibonacci numbers, rabbits, and #poetry. #mtbos #iteachmath

We had good #mathisfun this AM at Chapel Hill #mathCircle continuing 1st-3rd graders exploring counting diagonals in polygons. We looked at the ‘lazy mayors’ way (every city builds additional roads - mayors don’t coordinate to avoid duplication) after reviewing n-3, n-3 countdown #mtbos #iteachmath

(Post 1 of 2) My 1st and 2nd grade Stanford #mathCircle students came up with some very nice #Fibonacci / #Pingala (Pingala is in one of them!) #poetry ! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun #mathAndArts

Another nice meal at all #vegan Wildseed in Palo Alto, including meeting the manager, Augie, who worked with me to plan Monday’s dinner for 50! At today’s lunch I met my #mathCircle manager and several fellow teachers! #mtbos #iteachmath

What a #mathisfun #mathcircle we had thus morning at UNC. We explored ‘Christmas Numbers’ or the number of gifts given in #twelveDaysOfChristmas . It was a big group with lots of new children! I excerpted from my handout Mathinst.com/christmas . #mtbos #iteachmath

I stress color and neatness to help organize work in math as one builds and then shares a solution. One of my 2nd graders at Stanford #mathCircle nicely demonstrated a number of cool patterns in Bernoulli's Triangle with excellent presentation! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun #bernoullisTriangle

We had a lot of #mathisfun considering bounds, finding possible numbers of intersections in non-coincident circles (playing w/ pipe cleaner circles helped), and seeing connections among Handshake, Circle Intersection, and Triangle Numbers in 1st-3rd grade Chapel Hill #mathCircle #mtbos #iteachmath
March 29, 2025 at 4:24 PM
I compiled all of my weekly material and parent notes for this past 10-week quarter of #mathCircle for 1st and 2nd graders at Stanford Math Circle - what a #mathisfun list of topics! It all added up to 577 pages! #mtbos #iteachmath

We had #mathisfun in Chapel Hill #mathcircle further exploring Spaghetti/Pizza/Watermelon Numbers considering underlying patterns. I gave a hint for next time to use #pascalsTriangle as a base and use the idea of "running totals" to see if they find these (in Bernoulli's Triangle) #mtbos #iteachmath

I'm working on a financial literacy #mathCircle topic to present on Saturday and hope that this game and simulation I'm building proves valuable to intro ideas like percent (without multiplication!), sales/use vs income tax, social #equity, and just arithmetic to 1st-3rd graders. #mtbos #iteachmath

We had a a lot of #mathisfun in Chapel Hill #mathCircle 1st-3rd grade looking at counting diagonals in a polygon. There are so many cool patterns.! #mtbos #iteachmath

What cool homework I get to go through! Part of the homework for my 1st and 2nd grade #mathCircle students at Stanford is to write #Fibonacci / #Pingala #poetry. I love this one by a student named Yifan! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun #mathAndArts

I love that my students love math. This is the first page of homework by a 2nd grader at Stanford #mathCircle. #mtbos #iteachmath

(shared w/permission of student & family) This 2nd grader in my #mathCircle shows a unique way of seeing the strength of the triangle - by blowing! In class we remembered the classic "The Three Little Pigs" story. I love my students' creativity, curiosity, & engagement! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun

I get such motivated/smart/engaged students. This week in 1st/2nd grade Stanford #mathCircle we're looking more at counting - salads, ice cream bowls, & clothing combinations. Few examples: one had a nice tree, another understood abstracting w/variables, two had trees w/drawings. #mtbos #iteachmath
October 21, 2025 at 5:36 PM
We had a fun group at Chapel Hill #mathCircle on #PiDay exploring circles including exploring measurement errors and finding that a little more than 3 diameters makes a circumference. #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun
March 14, 2026 at 3:49 PM
A Stanford #mathCircle 1st grader successfully identified all 56 pieces w/ 10 straight cuts of a "pizza" (Lazy Caterer's Sequence or central polygonal numbers)! In theory it's 56; the 10th Triangle Number=55 (1+2+3+...+10 = 5 pairs of 11)+1. Wow! How careful he is! #mtbos #iteachmath #mathisfun
