Beastly beliefs: medieval edition 🦄
AKA: ‘Beware the bonnacon’ 💩
#MedievalMonday

The Divinity School was in the news recently when a 3D digital survey revealed that a ceiling boss long catalogued as a tangled calf or cow was actually a monoceros: a one-horned mythical beast, similar to a unicorn.

In a silent country church, January 2018. I like the light and dark of this photo of the Church of All Saints, Orton, Cumbria. This church originated in the 12th century with subsequent extensions and alterations over the centuries.

Since I had the medieval manuscript books out, here’s an illustration from my copy of John O. Westwood’s Facsimiles of Anglo-Saxon and Irish Manuscripts published in 1868 of the mid-8th-century Irish Gospels of St Gall. Westwood studied all of his facsimiles from sight before recreating.

St Laurence Church, Ludlow Shropshire.

In 1540, John Leland described the church as “very Fayre and large and richly adorned and taken for the Fayrest in all these parts”. This sentiment still holds true as you can see by the crossing.
If you've not been, it's well worth the trip.
