US Navy transfers first Virginia Payload Module of USS Arizona submarine for final assembly
General Dynamics Electric Boat transferred the first completed 184-foot Virginia Payload Module section for the future USS Arizona from Quonset Point, Rhode Island, to Groton, Connecticut. The 10,200-ton Block V submarine hull incorporates an 83-foot-long midships extension that houses four large-diameter payload tubes. This structural integration increases the vessel's vertical launch capacity to 40 Tomahawk-class or equivalent strategic munitions. More here -

Who midships the midshipman?

Folks, I think I may be a nerd when I'm reading stuff like this for fun

3/4 Honest thing of real beauty, beautifully, properly built & carefully landscaped for easy care. Each sweeping turn had maintenance free heavy grade simple galvanised railings. I imagined myself on a #UBoat conning tower. Truly stunning, carefully considered, developer accessibility enhancement.

Why not just pull out the old plans for the WWII Essex-class carriers and build a few of them? Island midships, steam catapult, just perfect!

Relevant sections from "Flight Deck Design of the Next Generation Aircraft Carrier", by W. Baker, S. D. Brennan and M. Husni, Naval Engineers Journal, May 2000.

This concerns the CVNX ECBL design which preceded Ford, but explains why the location of the island is important.

@d20yfx.bsky.social saw the post about the names for your two new ships.

I'm curious what the TH crews think of the new design?

I've only seen an illustration of stuff forward, is there a low working deck and crane aft?

I'm curious what you think of that vs trawler style w/ midships working deck

Some purists may tell you that the best format for watching My Cousin Vinny is through the windshield of a 1960s Chevy 327.

But on deck a-midships?

The delicate ballet as The Waverley pirouettes around its midships and heads off doon the watter! First stop Greenock (26/7/26)

That is a big chunk of the midships that's missing.

Shadows are the key. Something is casting a shadow from midships to the bow.

Midships and 2nd funnel done 😁
July 11, 2026 at 2:39 PM
Starting on the next section - the forward midships (or the bit behind the first funnel). You can see the coal bunkers for the boilers on the forward section. The attention to detail is really cool!

This kind of arrangement has a certain charm, too.

Sure, it's got the superstructures and profile but it's missing:
-aft helicopter control station
-midships boat davit
-aft CIWS for destroying incoming Chinese missiles

IJN Hayasui 速吸 was a fast fleet oiler fitted with aviation facilities capable of handling the Aichi B7A Ryūsei, as depicted with this Aoshima 1:700 kit. I've not found any evidence she got to carry the new B7A before she was sunk though.

Suction Sails

Spotted the Ville de Bordeaux, an Airbus chartered Ro-Ro in Morehead City today. Three 22-meter suction sail units were installed in 2024, reporting an average fuel saving of 1.7 metric tons per day. AIS shows her now returning to France.

According to Wikipedia, during WW1 the effect was insignificant, mostly appearing to result in more torpedoes hitting off-midships rather than straight on.

During WW2 it was used a bit in harbours to hide against scenery. Today the British Navy uses different fields of grey that's sort of similar.
