Same with #ActiveTravel - we have regs that make it harder to deliver safe infra, which in turn deters #ModalShift, which worsens congestion, which slows traffic…
The fundamental problem, and the dirty laundry that doesn't get talked about, is level of service - or more specifically, the specific clause of the Traffic Management Act (2004) that states local authorities have a legal obligation to "secure the expeditious movement of traffic".

This is very disappointing, especially if it's accompanied by a further freeze in fuel duty. Neither intervention will do anything to encourage necessary #ModalShift, especially in a #ClimateEmergency where above all we need less private car use for short journeys #DecarbonisingTransport

Antwerpen, Zaventem en Leuven krijgen hogesnelheidstrein naar Duitsland
Er zijn plannen voor een nieuwe hogesnelheidstreinverbinding met Duitsland. Die zou vertrekken in Antwerpen, en via het station van Brussels Airport in Zaventem, Leuven en Luik rijden naar de Duitse steden Aken en Keulen. Dat blijkt uit een aanvraag die werd ingediend bij de regulator, het Federaal Agentschap voor Regulering van Transport.

I guess the question there is ‘to whom is NH accountable?’
If it’s not wasting money like this (and undermining #ModalShift by doing so), it’s wasting it on planting trees in landscaping, that then die.

Even a 10-20% #ModalShift away from driving would make our towns and cities much nicer, and over and over the evidence is clear - if you build it they will come.

This is why we need continuous schemes and building safer junctions needs to be prioritised.
Continuous routes also encourage more #ModalShift than short discontinuous sections - should we be building “spinal” routes then build out from there?

Yep. The big problem is that in the UK a lot of schemes are not really thought about from the perspective of level of traffic stress (LTS). If even a single junction on a route is a level 4 (the highest), then the entire journey is a level 4; something only extremely confidence riders will do.

Need to discourage driving/encourage #ModalShift for journeys <3 miles
1 or 2p a mile is ridiculously cheap given the externalities. And given HMRC let people claim - what? - 46p per mile in expenses. Should be much more, and the first 3 miles should be dramatically more

Yes and no. Parking frequently isn’t an issue outside of core hours, and IIRC 70% of NHS staff do no OOH work.
