Shrouded in ice in the lonely Weddell Sea, Vega Island is an eerie sight to behold. On this speck of land east of the Antarctic Peninsula, ice, rock outcrops, and glacial moraines combine to create the appearance of a smirking skull in profile looking toward Devil Island. These images show Vega Island’s creepy countenance at the start of austral autumn (left) and in spring (right). They were acquired with the OLI (Operational Land Imager) on Landsat 9 on March 22, 2025, and October 10, 2026, respectively. (Clouds obscured the island in March 2026.) A…

The moraines feature is called Sìthean Mòr Dail a' Chaorainn which if my DuoLingo Gaelic is correct, translates to "The Big Fairy Hill of the Meadow of the Rowan Tree" IIRC fairies live under hill features that are conical. Best known being Sìth Chailleann or Schiehallion.

If we could develop better diagnostic tests, would fewer moraines be terminal?

The Great Plains are old seabeds that got thrust up all in one piece! Ohio had like 2-3 different glaciers that made a lot of flatlands with moraines and kettle lakes (plus Lake Erie and the Ohio River system). The southernmost edge ran roughly Cincy to Columbus so it's much hillier south and east.

- buried kilometers deep, metamorphosed, folded, folded some more, pushed back up to the surface, and exposed by massive amounts of erosion and glaciation. The lakes are held in place behind the terminal moraines pushed there by glaciers.

The grey streaks on a glacier are called moraines (more specifically, central moraines or lateral moraines) and consist of rock debris, sand and dust. 😊

The photograph articulates the immense energy of Nature sculpting topography: massive glaciers advanced & carved out deep depressions (i.e. cirques) into the sides of mountains. As the climate warmed & the glaciers melted & retreated, they left behind hollowed basins & moraines...

#Flyday ! This plover is sitting on the ground just a few hundred meters from the face of the Athabasca Glacier in 🇨🇦. Not that many years ago it would have been sitting on meters of ice. Enjoy the weekend!

Look how the highest Pyrenees mountain looks like on Sept. 15th after the insane 2026 summer! 🌡️

No ice left below the summit (L) and Aneto's Glacier lost into the immense Little Ice Age forefield (moraines at the bottom) 🧊

A this pace, ~5-10 years before disappearance! 🔥

Why is disaster risk increasing in the Himalayas? [Explainer]
In a warming world, rising temperatures in high mountain regions are driving glacier retreat and melting, contributing to an increase in the number and area of glacial lakes. As glaciers retreat, they can create new lakes or expand old ones, sometimes contained by natural dams made of ice or moraines — ridges of rock, sediment and debris left behind by glaciers. If these dams fail, glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) can release huge volumes of water and debris, severely flooding downstream communities and infrastructure. In some cases, GLOFs involve rockfalls or the collapse of entire mountain slopes with cascading impacts. Or there can be avalanches — massive, rapid downhill flows of rocks, ice and snow. Scientists have improved glacier and lake monitoring in the Himalayan region, but large gaps remain in data collection, sharing and processing. This affects real-time early warning for river systems that run across international borders. In the aftermath of the recent Nepal flood disaster, this explainer looks at the relevance of these issues. What caused the August 2026 disaster in Nepal? Initial reports suggested that a massive mountain slope failure involving glacier ice in Nepal’s Langtang National Park, close to the Chinese border. The mass of...
