My school is putting in smartboards, which feels so...passé? No one uses those things anymore because they suck. It's just a $5,000 TV mounted in front of your whiteboard so you can't fucking use the white board.

It’s interesting that despite many different search terms, there are no current articles on Newsela about deportations, Abrego Garcia, El Salvador prisons, etc. it’s certainly a choice made by the largest provider of differentiated reading materials for teachers. #SSChat #edusky #Newsela

I place him at a level 3-4 grade. He could be remediated through hard work and practice. I highly recommend Fast Track Reading along with daily NewsELA articles with comprehension questions.

The quizzes on these articles didn't read as if they were written by humans. And they aren't. I checked - Newsela switched to using generative AI sometime in 2023 to generate quiz questions. They are nearly impossible to answer correctly.

My school district just sent out an email about all these great new professional development opportunities to learn how to use the new rainforest-torching plagiarism machine software they got for us. So glad they got us that instead of renewing the NewsELA license 👍

Putting genAI junk in front of kids abdicates our responsibility to provide high quality and accurate instruction. Newsela used to pay humans to write quizzes (not a lot). The AI version is not equivalent and is actively harmful. This is a small example but a worrying sign.

I can’t say enough about Newsela (pronounced Newzella, not News ELA). They’re a phenomenal resource. We’re begging them to let single teachers buy in. At present it’s district only so if you have access, USE IT. My ELA partner and I collaborated w/it constantly. Changing Lexiles in articles is A+++!
