"200 African American women & 20 African American men, very painfully, built the #NorfolkBotanicalGarden starting in 1938, were paid 25¢/hr., & not allowed in again until the mid-1960s due to the #JimCrowe era"

A once-segregated botanical garden honors the Black workers who built it
The Norfolk Botanical Garden opened a $50 million conservatory and unveiled a Chihuly work, with a renewed commitment to reckon with its past.

Photo of an American bumblebee from the posterior aspect flying away from a pink aster flower with small defined yellow pistil flowers. The bumblebee is in motion but appears stationary. In the background, further asters can be seen as well as bushes and a portion of the red brick pathway that runs through the Sarah Lee Baker Perennial Garden at Norfolk Botanical Garden.

I had a lot of fun yesterday pruning 30-40 year old azaleas on my church grounds.

The heavy pruning can be a bit of a shock to people, so I'm comforting myself with YouTube videos like this one from the Norfolk Botanical Gardens that confirm it's the right thing to do.

Some rainy day fun at the #norfolkbotanicalgarden enjoying the warmer (albeit windy) weather. #plantphotography #japaneseplants #rainydays
Fronds of green maidenhair fern covered in silvery droplets of water stretch down from the top of the picture to just barely touch the grey-brown cement below. In the foreground, a rusty red leaf rests on the cement and in the background, hints of a grey stone wall can be seen through the fern. Close up of a cluster of bell-shaped flowers, white with light pink edges, hanging from a bright green Japanese Pieris plant in the foreground. A blurry bright green mossy stone in the foreground gives way to the clear image of a small creek lined by green foliage and ferns with several bright white & mottled pink camellia flowers floating in the water. A closeup shot of several tendrils of bell-shaped yellow flowers hanging from the dark brown branch of a large Early Strachyus shrub. In the background, muted, more branches full of the hanging flowers can be seen.

Another #macro from my recent #NorfolkBotanicalGarden adventure. There’s just so #mushroom for beauty in this world!
Image shows a close up shot of brown and tan colored turkey tail mushrooms on the edge of a wood log that is partially submerged in white snow.

Spent some time at the #NorfolkBotanicalGarden playing around with my #macro lens setup. We’re still getting to know each other, this setup & I, but I feel like I got a few half decent shots.
Image shows a close-up of the face & torso of a patinaed bronze female-coded angel statue, the subject is seated with their hands folded delicately beneath their chin and a portion of their wing is visible in the back left. In the far background is blurred greenery and blue sky.

Three parting shots on the way out of #NorfolkBotanicalGarden. What a great walk. Morning, noon, and night, winter or summer, sun or rain, I’ve never had a bad walk at NBG. It’s been my home-away-from-home for the last 5 years.
