We found that copies of the LINE1 transposon are key “architects” of the nucleolar genome in human embryonic stem cells. This work brings together two facets of Barbara McClintock’s pioneering research: nucleolar organizer regions and transposable elements.

New method drop:
HCR-Proxy, a modular proximity labelling approach to profile local proteome composition around RNA at nanoscale, subcompartmental resolution. Thereby we resolved nested nucleolar layers and uncovered the grammar of spatial protein partitioning.

Combining sequencing and imaging, @brangwynnelab.bsky.social maps the spatiotemporal dynamics of rRNA processing, demonstrating how rRNA serves as both a scaffold and a substrate for the nucleolus—a multiphase, liquid-like structure. 🧪 🧬

Online Now: The nucleolar granular component mediates genome-nucleolus interactions and establishes their repressive chromatin states Online now:
The nucleolar granular component mediates genome-nucleolus interactions and establishes their repressive chromatin states
Gupta et al. showed that NPM1, a nucleolar granular component factor, mediates NAD association with the nucleolus. NPM1 binds NADs and recruits histone methyltransferase G9a to establish H3K9me2 repressive chromatin, revealing that the nucleolus functions not only as a scaffold for NADs but also actively contributes to their chromatin repression.
