Quantum Turing patterns in parametrically driven resonators show distinct morphologies (stripes, spots, labyrinths) remain resolvable after Gaussian entanglement witnesses vanish—parametric noise scaling separation grows with system size.

Directed cell migration is a versatile mechanism for rapid developmental pattern formation
The evolution of multicellular organisms hinges on self-organization mechanisms that generate tissues with diverse functions. A central process is the breaking of symmetry to form spatial patterns fro...

Three is more, and different.

2-component mass-conserving reaction-diffusion: coarsens forever.
3-component: maps onto a new active field theory (Active Model B−), and coarsening arrests into dots, stripes, foams.

Two physically very different systems. The same patterns in space.

A coincidence?

No — a duality.

💧🌀 Active matter meets interface physics!
We show how conserved active emulsions form traveling interfacial waves and self-propelling liquid gears, powered by non-reciprocal chemical interactions.

Just out in Nature Physics: Research Briefing (with Suckjoon Jun) on how Min protein oscillations in E. coli remain robust. The secret? A conformational switch that buffers change, and a fresh look at an old system through a physicist’s lens.

Robust Min protein oscillations revealed in living bacterial cells - Nature Physics
Bacteria can sustain spatial protein oscillations for a remarkably wide range of protein concentrations. The robustness arises from a conformational switch of a key protein between latent versus activ...

#PatternFormation in the real world. This looks like spiral waves which can be modelled by the reaction–diffusion system of Fitzhugh–Nagumo type

🤓🤩
At first glance, looks like a Gray–Scott reaction-diffusion

But it’s a fertilized starfish 🥚: proteins self-organizing into spiral waves across the membrane

Same dynamics seen in ❤️/🧠/🌊, even quantum fluids. Universality in action!

"This rata #forest is the most stunning example of #crownshyness I have ever seen... It’s found on Enderby Island, one of the most remote places on the planet."

This phenomenon occurs when trees’ crowns don't touch, forming a distinct pattern among their canopies.

So, why does it matter?
Explicitly, I've shown that we have to be careful when approximating geometries in applications. Curved edges can fundamentally alter what it means for a domain to be 1D, or 2D.
