Kinburn remains a placename very squarely in the category of "I can't believe it's not in Scotland"

turkic languages are affirmatively scary because they have changed so comparably little one from another that you'll look at a placename in xinjiang and a placename in azerbaijan and the difference will be literally just the spelling

These are cringe and they are stubbornly incurious of English placename traditions. The towns that are named after individuals are in colonies.

Fun Scottish placename fact! Bede mentions a place along the Antonine Wall called Peanfahel (end of the wall). This seems to survive as the current Falkirk placename Kinneil, for similar reasons to those the good Doctor sets out below.
Cáisc, Modern Irish for 'Easter', at first looks unrelated to other Easter-words, beyond Scots Gaelic (Càisg) and Manx (Caisht).

My favourite one of those is realising that etymologically Dublin, London, Blackpool and Douglas are all the same placename (a compound word meaning Dark Water).
