It began effecting people's hotel bookings too. I had to start telling people stop clicking the top results for Hyatt on Google and just GO to the Hyatt website. And look out for popunder/up windows redirecting people to phony websites that are third parties. Google is worthless!
We've been waterboarded by advertisements for so fucking long that some of y'all have forgotten search was near perfect in 2018ish, and then Google switched their results algorithm to prioritizing ads and SEO keyword bloating.

the modern adblocker is an evolution of the popup blocker, which was invented because you couldn't go anywhere without getting a dozen popup and popunder advertisements and normal people didn't want to have the page they were trying to read covered up by an ad for gas station boner pills

idk if it's my keyboard or bluesky but there's now underline suggestions on PHRASES and incorrect words that have a popunder when tapped and it's driving me crazy bc i don't want them
when i go to, say, correct a misspelled word, this gets in the way massively

Maybe it's because I'm very old and used to do webdev, but popup (cf. popunder) has a slightly different connotation for me. The distinctive feature of a dialog, I think, is that it's always modal.
Though the HTML spec doesn't agree me with since the <dialog> element has a non-modal mode.
