#pournelle
There is a quote attributed to science fiction author Jerry Pournelle (although the sentiment has been offered by many others) that money will get you through times of no awards better than awards will get you through times of no money.
I’m also reminded of something George R.R. Martin once said about blockbuster art: They already got their awards. Their awards were popularity and tons of money. A gold statue doesn’t help them. But that same statue could mean everything to people who make art that deserves a bigger audience.

For those asking, they literally had the high ground. They could've dropped a thousand asteroids on us without ever getting close. Read "Footfall" by Niven and Pournelle.

that reminds me of one of my favorite quotes: "over the course of writing The More in God's Eye, Larry Niven became more like Jerry Pournelle and Jerry Pournelle also became more like Jerry Pournelle"

Glad to see someone else saw what @jeetheer.bsky.social and I were talking about.

The authoritarian capitalist tradition is obsessed w sci-fi and fantasy--in part because they've not read much of any real philosophy. But they love imagining that Heinlein, Rand, Pournelle... were doing philosophy.
Literally posted a fascinating discussion between @jeetheer.bsky.social and @matthew.flux.community on tech billionaires being influenced by dystopian science fiction (notably Heinlein) last week, and the NYT straight up quotes Luckey on Heinlein. So reposting:

I'll give Niven and Pournelle credit for realizing New Age woo and right-wing fundamentalism could come together, but they were wrong about the political valences of this AND thinking their own side didn't count as woo.

A strange thing for me was to read the books that Niven and Pournelle wrote with Steven Barnes.

Since Barnes' politics are so directly in opposition to the evils that Niven and Pournelle endorsed.

funny thing is that he was the more centrist of his writing partnership with Jerry Pournelle.

Indeed. Right wing author Jerry Pournelle proudly called himself a "12th century liberal".
