The fact that mass deportations are causing such violence and turmoil is embedded in Trump/Miller's deeper priorities—in the privileging of high removals over all else; in the privileging of Miller’s ethnic cleansing project over the economy and even over public safety.

I'm glad Douthat admits the public is turning against Trump's ICE raids, but he undersells this. The mass deportations aren't just unpopular because ICE agents are terrorizing and killing people. The core underlying goal is itself unpopular, as I try to argue here:

A really important point that @jamisonfoser.bsky.social makes here is that even the "crime is actually down" stories still play into Trump's hands because it still frames the National Guard deployments as being about crime instead of being military occupations by an authoritarian leader.

Trump and Stephen Miller actively want the spectacle of them admitting white Afrikaners while shutting out all other refugees. The flaunting of the privileging of white refugees is itself the point. They're speaking to a global "white genocide theory" audience here.
