the NIH shit is an example of why I’m straight up an authoritarian on social media stuff now: this is clearly at least partially due to online anti-vaxers becoming an appreciable and organized constituency. A system that alllows that to happen is a bad system. China won the argument on this shit.

It appears that to Netflix, the quality that distinguishes a podcast from other forms of media is the absence of visible effort (and the existence of ANY production credits)

I've always been convinced that video podcasts exist to force creators to be reliant on a closed distribution platform. Podcasts are built on tech (RSS) that nobody can own. Every major tech company has wanted to migrate podcasts to something proprietary, but it never sticks. Video is their answer.
I think any platform with a proprietary black box algorithm should be considered a publisher and lose Section 230 protections. make Facebook liable for all the genocidal hate speech in foreign languages it doesn’t bother to moderate
part of turning off the doom machine is, I think, greatly expanding the degree of legal liability that companies assume for their platforms. you can't stop anti-vax content from being put out, you can put the firm on the line if they ever put it in front of someone who didn't actively seek it out
There has always been a demand for the kind of content that social media supplies (conspiracy bullshit, etc), however, other forms of media had some institutional and societal brakes on supplying it that do not exist with social media. Fox News paid better part of a billion in the dominion lawsuit.

RCS isn't an open platform in practice. It isn't even as open as SMS/MMS. It heavily depends on proprietary Google and carrier infrastructure in practice. We can start by replicating Google's approach and then we can work on only using carrier services for carriers where it's actually supported.
