Biosecurity Bites.

The Tomato potato psyllid is a tiny sap-sucking insect that feeds on crops.

Tasmania remains free of the pest but all growers should be vigilant.

The Biosecurity Engagement Lead with TIA and the TAS Farm Innovation Hub, Craig Elliott, explains in the latest Biosecurity Bites.

The disease is carried by the Asian citrus psyllid, a non-native insect so tiny it can be mistaken for pollen. It spreads a bacterium as it sucks sap from the plants, traveling from grove to grove with little more than a light breeze. And it is difficult to control with pesticides.

Looking back at a study characterizing wLfag-FL, a novel Wolbachia strain from the wild lime psyllid, Leuronota fagarae.

These findings expand our understanding of Wolbachia diversity and host range, with implications for psyllid biology and HLB management.

🎉 New paper! We followed an ecological transect across Europe and uncovered new Liberibacter diversity—including ‘Ca. Liberibacter saliceti’ and a new Ca. L. psyllidaureus haplotype. Riparian ecosystems may be hotspots for Liberibacter diversity, transmission & symbiosis. 🌿🦠

Back in 1977 the only eucalypt psyllid was present in New Zealand was the Aphalarid Ctenarytaina eucalypti, the blue-gum psyllid.

Agreed (and indeed I verify psyllid records for Norfolk, which includes c10 fairly common gall causers), so certainly no criticism intended, I just thought it was worth pointing out that it is still worth using iRecord even if verifiers are not in place for all causers.

didn't know!

"Fresh curry leaves are prohibited from entering the U.S. because they can host the Asian citrus psyllid. This invasive pest carries bacteria that cause Huanglongbing (citrus greening disease), which is fatal to citrus trees and has cost the U.S. billions of dollars in revenue."

“Kennedy said that citrus greening, a bacterial disease spread by the Asian citrus psyllid, causes a decline in Brix (sugar) level, based on the percentage of soluble solids in juice. Florida’s citrus industry has been devastated by greening, first detected in 2005.”
Your juice is now less sweet.

💡The Alert List of our consortium partner @epponews.bsky.social now features Physalis longifolia, an invasive plant already competing with crops in parts of the EU and a known host for the pest species Bactericera cockerelli (also known as the potato psyllid).
⚠️ ADDITION TO THE EPPO ALERT LIST ⚠️

➡️ Physalis longifolia (Solanaceae), an invasive alien plant that can compete with crops.
