Day 24 of #devtober. Fixed the missing pthreads references. Due to a copy constructor the compiler kept inlining mutexes, I've disabled resource copying altogether.

New problem... Lag! The web build lags awfully. I ran a web profile, 94% of the performance is lost to memcpy (copying two pointers).

Also the web build broke, I don't know why... The compiler is nagging about undefined pthread constants, but I don't use pthreads!

Fixing that will come into priority, since I believe that web is a major target for games.

@iorsh I have used one-time initialization for years. But I used to do it very differently. call_once is new in C23, but it can be done differently with C11 features.

Furthermore if you install numpy from pypi or from conda-forge on different OSes or versions you might get different BLAS implementations (openblas, mkl, accelerate) and/or different threading layers (pthreads, openmp...) and different openmp runtimes (libgomp, libomp, vcomp, libiomp).

And we use this sort of language for inanimate cases all the time. “The loader thread wants to grab the mutex but it is contended,” isn’t making some deep claim about the inner life of pthreads.

just broke 300 FPS on 1080p with chrome. simd128, atomics, and pthreads.

sooner or later your toaster will be running AV1, probably.

(dlopen()/dlsym()'ing libssl, trying to figure out why this is segfaulting in pthreads?!)

Emscripten 3.1.58 is out! 🚀

github.com/emscripten-c...

This is a quick release after 3.1.57 to fix a regression.

3.1.57+58 add significant code size improvements to two separate features, pthreads and dynamic linking.

Interesting that a decent pthreads implementation seems to do best despite spinlocks doing best in kernel space. Bit of a head scratcher
October 3, 2024 at 9:29 PM
But yes, starting with pthreads, the most widely available, standard vanilla threading API is probably wise.
February 28, 2025 at 2:45 PM
Smart. ATM the default pthread implementation in KOS is incomplete, but we have a big-ass feature branch that I'd argue is totally ready to go and battle-tested (but the author wants more testing), which will add the full entirety of the pthreads API, including crazy unexpected shit for DC. lol.

"First, to implement multithreading in C requires primitives that are not part of ANSI C – although Pthreads was popular, there were (and still there are) many platforms without this library."

pthreads と表記したくなるのは駄目でしょうか…

Someone said yes, added that macOS threads (Cocoa) are built on top of pthreads (which makes sense, coming from a FreeBSD userspace)

people hate it when you use the c11 threads instead of pthreads. idk man im just trying to use the language.

📢 C-Blosc2 2.17.0 is out with the next improvements:

* Support for type sizes larger than 255 (and up to 512MB).
* Fix a leak in the pthreads emulation for Windows. Fixes 647.
* Update zstd to 1.5.7. Thanks to Tom Birch.

i very much doubt it does anything other than provide a layer over Windows CreateThreadEx() or pthreads anyway
