My quest to render the Moana scene in #RStats with #rayrender was not only successful, but it also led to a bugfix in base R!

This is absolutely insane, I just rendered this effectively 3.1 billion triangles 900 frame 16 sample per pixel 960x540 animation in #RStats last night in 6 hours using the M1 GPU and #rayrender -- it would have taken a WEEK with the CPU renderer. Completely game changing for iterative work

People think it's really easy to make a rotating 3D map in R nowadays, but you don't see the hours of practice that #rayshader had to put in behind the scenes to make it look that effortless.

And here's a version that I generated overnight after watching this version and getting a little whiplash from the sudden interpolation in camera angle between keyframes--I implemented a spline-smoothed slerp interpolation in #rayrender for angular position to smooth out sudden jerky movements.
