#rayshader
Day 3 #30DayMapChallenge · Polygons. Did you think I'd forgotten about rayshader? Never! Here's average colours of Japan, inspired by Erin Davis' 2021 work. There are polygons; I just blended them together.

#rayshader adventures, an #rstats tale

Voter turnout in Prague City Assembly Elections by districts with #Rstats and #rayshader.

I leave interpretation of the elections to my smarter colleagues at Charles University, these are just useless, silly maps:)

Canyons eroded in thick loess and underlying Pliocene gravels and Ogallala Group, dropping from a high tableland into the North Platte valley west of Ogallala, Nebraska. View northeast in the area of Dankworth Canyon; shadows simulated for 9AM this morning using #rayshader.

I like this view better, from the north-northeast. I think the top of the Ogallala is marked by the change to less dissected interfluves dropping less steeply toward the valley. #rayshader

People think it's really easy to make a rotating 3D map in R nowadays, but you don't see the hours of practice that #rayshader had to put in behind the scenes to make it look that effortless.

(from my upcoming rayshader 1.0 release blog post😀)

Created and rendered in #RStats with #rayrender

Ahh, that's better! Nice, clean 3D ggplots with no texture bleeding (because those are real 3D polygons, automatically transformed into the 3D coordinate system of the underlying ggplot!)

data_column_top = "total_pop_15",
color = "height"

Excited to be at #positconf this year! I'm not giving a talk, but find me to talk about realistic geospatial visualization with #rayshader, lots of cool new improvements to 3D rendering and animation in #RStats with #rayrender, and enhancing {targets} workflows with #tarborist! 👋

Visualization of a southern Driftless Area at 8AM on January 1. View to the southwest. Created with #rayshader using render_highquality and skymodel_r. Mostly for my own enjoyment now, but I could make some of these to talk about slope aspect and microclimate, couldn't I?
September 13, 2026 at 1:23 AM
View from the opposite direction, same time and date. Look at how nicely it renders those gullies and small dams in the lower left! I could spend a lot of time on this, but I also want to get out to this area again in October. #rayshader

Finally: #rayshader will soon have the beautiful sunsets made in #RStats I've always dreamed of, along an actual sense of scale for your landscapes, thanks to some big updates I'm pushing to #rayrender and #skymodelr 😀

You can ask me more in Houston at #positconf 👋

Rayshader: now a realistic "flying through clouds" dream simulator in R with rayrender's new volume rendering! All I need to add now are whooshing air sounds and a faceless clown who slowly chases you throughout the scene—gaining, always gaining.

A fly-by ski trip generated entirely in #RStats with #rayshader and #rayrender, featuring realistic lighting for that location at a specific date and time, properly marked roads, trails, ski trails, streams, lakes, houses, and 2 million (!) individually rendered trees! All generated from {sf} data!

Ever wonder "how big is the `volcano` dataset in #RStats, really?"

No? Oh.

... Well, no need to (not) wonder any longer, thanks to rayshader's upcoming raypeople with render_people() + render_trails() here!

Palais de l'Alma is masked in the data, so its footprint has become a water feature

An upside to taking an absence from posting for 18 months is that fantastic new data has appeared in the interim.

#30daymapchallenge Day 30: The final map

Vienna, Austria. The final map I posted to the other place in June 2023 before my Musk-ation, cropped to the 50MB bsky limit. LiDAR www.wien.gv.at/, overlays @openstreetmap.bsky.social, rendered in #rayshader #rstats #maps

Time to make some new things now!

I've just seen this package and now your video. This is so cool! Remind me of when #rayshader came out and suddenly we could make ridiculous 3D maps.

Naive cropping using fuzzy color selection is unlikely to work reliably for my set of input images. Just to give you an idea, here's a render of a 3x3 km tile of my home city of Münster:

I tried to use the left image as a clipping mask for the right picture. This fails, among other things, because the parameter 'shadowwidth' to rayshader::plot_3d is only respected when shadow = TRUE, meaning dimensions and positioning will always diverge between the two renders.
November 18, 2025 at 1:38 PM
Question on #rayshader #rstats: I want to combine several images created with rayshader::render_highquality. I have complex images that will end up in print. This will only look good if I can get rid of each image's background. How to do that despite Monte Carlo noise?
November 18, 2025 at 1:38 PM
Ouhh, that sounds awesome! I had a big rayshader project going on for a while, but I kind of lost steam when the iteration times were going up and up. I have since upgraded my machine, you have released tree3d and now this great update. Time to dive back in, I'd say! ☺️👏

This is amazing - take out this 3D look at consensus classifications of kelp forests from @FloatingForests! Might have to play with this more. Damn you @tylermorganwall for just destroying my productivity today. And thank you. #rayshader #rstats #citizenscience @the_zooniverse

I just made an exaggerated 3D digital elevation model of Australia using the rayshader package in R
