#resharper
15 years ago, it was common enough for the company employing a professional programmer to pay:

$5,400 per year for their IDE (Visual Studio with MSDN subscription)
+ $249 per year for a better autocomplete extension (ReSharper)

The productivity increase justified these costs!

Wild, huh?

As I work on Resharper performance, I learn about limitations of .NET (at least, .NET Framework) that I wasn't aware of. Here, I shaved 1 second of CPU time on startup by... removing a call to Array.Empty<T>.

Resharper, always.

Time to make it official: starting Monday, I'll be leaving Datadog and joining JetBrains as principal engineer 🎉
I'll be working on various topics, but one of my first responsibilities will be to improve the performance of Resharper, which is a thrilling but frightening challenge.

After all these years using #unity I just learned about the cost of null comparison against Unity objects, duh. #gamedev https://github.com/JetBrains/resharper-unity/wiki/Avoid-null-comparisons-against-UnityEngine.Object-subclasses

It allows me to measure the responsiveness of Visual Studio when running with ReSharper, in various conditions.

If you are using Visual Studio with Resharper or another tool replacing Intellisense:

Setting 'Disable Intellisense' to True is _not_ enough, you also need to set 'Disable Database' to True

This made VS sooooo much faster for me 😅

ReSharper, the JetBrains add-on that made a bad Visual Studio bearable.

JetBrains still makes the best IDEs on the market.

honestly at this rate the .NET Foundation should just hand a few bands over to JetBrains to let their guys integrate the diagnostics from ReSharper into Roslyn (the C# compiler) proper

The plot thickens... it's not VS2022, it's Resharper, 'cos if I suspend Resharper it stops happening... but I've disabled every Resharper setting I can find that looks like it controls this: Any ideas @jetbrains.com ?

One thing I like about working on a new codebase is finding all those low-hanging fruits, optimizations that have a significant impact for a relatively low effort.

Here, before/after, squashing ~140 MB of heap allocations from Resharper licensing code.
